Genesis XXI (Jr) Restoration

Just picked up my second (Jr) 1988 Genesis XXI. Looks to be a pretty good starting point. Interesting that both my Jr's have 1988 date code stamps on lid end caps and cookboxs but this one must be earlier in the year because it has the older control panel, knobs and fuel level sticker. I'm happy with the condition. It's not perfect by any means but in my opinion an excellent starting point for Restoration. I may not get back to this project for a bit but wanted to start a thread.

I consider myself lucky to have found it. Especially close by. The nice people I got it from acquired it from an old lady who was going to send it to the dump a couple years ago still in working condition. They used it until the flavor bars started collapsing and one of the burners was completely shot. If I didn't pick it up it would most likely be going to the dump now. Sad to think how many of them in good working condition have been junked. Or junked for needing an igniter or a burner or a flavorizer bar... I know I value them more than most people but 37 years is an impressive run for a grill without maintenance especially compared to what's available new today. I'm glad I'll be able to start the clock over on this one.

Josh, I think we would all be astounded to know just how man Genesis 1000/Silver B generation grills that are dumped in land fills or crushed in salvage yards every single day. Thousands probably.

I just think of the ones that this small group of have picked off the curb… how we’re so outnumbered by scrap guys that see $1 worth of scrap where we see years of faithful service after a little elbow grease

Yah, my scrap guy has sold me a couple Genesis Silver B's over the years that he had picked up elsewhere. I think I gave him $25 or $30 for them, so my guess is that he can probably scrap a grill for maybe $10 or so. Whereas, if it gets rehabbed, it becomes a $300 rehab.
