Genesis 4/5 Restore

I am sure that is true Larry. But this is a Genesis 1-5. They had different tank scales and possibly required the scale sticker in a different position. My tank scale has a straight pointer.

Oh, I didn't know that :( IDK how truly important the position is (within reason). I mean look how sloppily it's put on from the factory on mine

I agree Larry. I think the tank scale things are dumb anyway. If Weber is going to cut a few $$$$, I would think they could skip the scale assembly and just put a hook to hang the tank on.
But, this is a kind of special build and I want to keep it as close to original as possible. No matter how ridiculous it seems.

I get that Steve. I think I am in the minority on that opinion. But, I can honestly say that I cannot ever remember looking at the grill tank scale reading when I checked how much propane I had left. I always just reach under and kind of lift it and go by feel. I always have a spare full tank on hand in case I run out anyway.

I am hoping for a tomorrow afternoon/evening reveal.....barring yet another gotcha. I think all I have left is a final coat of paint on the lid handle and then final assembly. I finally got the burners installed and the grill functions perfectly....Flame check and all. Yes, I still have the Flame Check Rock, but it has been otherwise retired.

I am pretty pleased with the results but I do think I could have done things a little different. One problem was the tradeoff between originality (matching VIN numbers) and upgrades. I guess I struck a middle ground. Once this is done, back to simple and familiar Silver B's. I have a request to fill by fathers day.

OK, it is complete. I have it listed for $490. I picked up this grill late last fall and and am happy to have finally taken the time to complete the restoration project. THis was not a stock restoration. But it is mostly original. Some of the differences is that I converted it from NG to LP. I also added 9mm solid SS rod grates. Some of the original parts were replaced on the grill, but they were replaced with identical parts to include the wood and a couple of the glass doors. And off course I added the tank scale, bracket and changed the right side cabinet piece to one compatible with the LP tank. The lid is actually a replacement. There is really nothing wrong with the original except that the carbon burned onto the inside of the lid was extremely thick and hard. I was breaking razor blades right and left and barely making a dent so I called an audible and grabbed the spare I had sitting in my shed for the last 6 or 7 years and it is identical to the original. The handle and the lid is also a replacement. The original was in pretty good shape but warped.

Thanks to Jon for helping me out with several replacement parts and many of the parts I needed to do the NG to LP conversion. Thanks to Mark for the near perfect lid handle. Thanks to Larry for the guidance on the thermocouple replacement and thanks everyone who provided me with advice and encouragement to get this project completed. I seem to be prone to doing a single "one off" rehab each year and this fits that bill. I don't plan to do any more even if another Genesis 5/5000 rehab candidate presents itself. But, I am very happy to check this grill off my Bucket List of grill rehabs.
