Genesis 4/5 Restore

Hi Samuel;

The grill started out life as a Genesis 4, but the PO had the side burner added. I am not sure if the extra work table came with the Genesis 4 or if it came with the kit to convert the grill to a Genesis 5.

The two trays came with a G4. It could be that the side burner was an add-on.

The wood handles on your trays are amazing! Nice color choice. I can't wait to see this grill when you are done.

I am devoting some more time to my Genesis 4/5 build. I inspected the parts to determine which ones will need more work (rust remediation) before painting and did some cleaning of parts. I am finding just some surface rust, so no GOTCHAs yet. I also converter my side burner to LP with parts supplied by @Jon Tofte. He also replaced the two glass doors for me that broke in transit along with the LP side panel that is different on LP grills from NG ones. I sourced an LP manifold to complete the conversion. Tomorrow after picking up a rehab grill and delivering a rehabbed one, I plan to start some of the rust remediation in prep for painting. I guess I should take some photos, but parts are parts, rust or not.

Looking forward to seeing your restoration! It's one of my all time favorite lids. I hope to build my grill for my gray lid sometime soon. I'm planning on using my IPE Ironwood Brazilian Walnut on that one. Watching your beautiful grill restoration will most likely motivate me.

I thought there was only one door to replace! @Jon Tofte comes thru with more than his awesome stickers - this is why I love this forum. Can’t wait to see the life @Bruce brings back to this grill!

OK, I made some progress today. I got a lot of the grill parts repainted and I am hoping to start putting the wood slats on the Zbars and then installing the cabinet panels back into the grill. Hopefully I will have some photos to post tomorrow as proof that I am actually working on it.

On a side note, what do you guys do about a non-functioning Flame Check? Can you buy a replacement Thermistor? Or is the best option just to disable it. I would really like to keep this project fully functioning as it was designed, but I am sure you can't even get a replacement from Weber any longer.

It would be ideal if it worked the way it was supposed to. I know water heaters and gas fireplaces work in a similar fashion so maybe you can find something that will work. I never looked at a schematic for that grill so I don't know how much help Weber would be in this case.

Thanks guys. I think I will try to find one that is close to the factory one and make it fit.

Actually, the one that you linked, Larry, looks almost perfect. I have to caliper the parts to see if they are the same though.
