Genesis 1100 restoration

I am new at this, so please bear with me as I stumble along this journey. I have admired the restored grills I've seen in these forums. So I thought this would be a good place to share. I am restoring a '98 1100 redhead I got on CL for $20. I figure to make this new again (for my personal use) I should budget about $200 for this restoration. That seems like stealing when in the end I basically should have a new Weber grill. After inspection, I think I'm looking at new burners, fb's, grates, igniter, and warming racks. Scrub and scrape and sand the lid sides and tub. And of course new paint. When I figure out how to share pics I will put them on the thread.

Welcome to the forum Oren. I have refurbished and restored a few 1000s to flip or for friends parts are easy to find. For flavorizer bars try rcplanebuyer on ebay he sells SS bars which are thicker then Webers and cost less I've had a set for about five years and they are still like new, I think he's doing SS grates now also. Weber of course is a good source of parts as is ereplacementparts.com.

Here is the redhead I'm working on. Thanks for the advice on parts. I have it broken down now and cleaning, cleaning, cleaning. If nothing else, 16 years builds up a lot of gunk...

That should clean up very well! You'll have a very nice grill when you're done. I have the same grill except with the deep tub and 13 flavorizer bars instead of 5 in green, bought it new in 97 and will keep it forever.

Hey Rich, this one is a deep tub with 13 fb's as well. I have it ready to reassemble now with new parts on the way. I was able to find new 16 gauge fb's for much less than Weber's 18 or 20 gauge product. Though I am going to attempt to clean and restore the old and rusty CI grates, I opted for new CI grates since this one is to keep. I also opted for new burners (about $25 online), though I am keeping the old ones and will clean them up for later use as well. Here is pic I took during a very tedious cleaning process, though I feel like I should have sand-blasted inside the tub. Just didn't have access to it.

Oren, that's great that you have the 13 bars instead of 5. I've had both and there is a big difference in the flare ups, not saying the 5 model is bad but with the 13 almost never gets flare ups. Mine still has the original burners, I did get CI cooking grates and really like them also got the HD SS FBs from rcplanebuyer on EBay about 5 years ago and they still are like new.,
I just bought a 2009 Genesis E320 NG off of CL because our new home has a gas bib on the patio, so the Silver B is now retired and will be used as a backup if needed and for rotisserie work as the new Genesis has a wider body and the roti won't fit but it still has the east/west burners which I like.
Make sure to post pictures when you get it done. I've rehabbed about 5 of them and flipped them kind of a make busy hobby for me.

Ok gang, I finished the grill. Now, I know I may have turned away some purists out there by not keeping the grey slats original to the grill. They were in decent shape, but I wanted a personal flare to this one. And yes, I am a bit of a country boy. So I beg forgiveness.

The process was fun but tedious, and very educational. I hope to do this again, now that I've learned a thing or two.

Very, very nice Oren! You did an outstanding job on that redhead! Really like the wood work. You're going to get many great cooks off that grill.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. Now comes many cooks. I will certainly share our better attempts (with pics) and even some of my wife's dynamite recipes.

what did you use to clean the firebox?

I got my Silver C broken down already and getting ready to do some cleaning action.

I beleive that is one of the best overhauls I have seen . I like your use of wood and design is excellant .
Very well done If you cook half as good as you rebuild a lot of people are going to be happy.

I did it the hard way. I used degreasers(strong alkaline based cleaners) and scraped manually. Then I followed up with a pressure washer. The outside was sanded down rather easily. Next time, I am going to try sandblasting the tub inside and out. I also was told to try products like Carbon Off to help with the large amounts of the carbon build up. However, I have not tried that yet. I did not get all of the build up removed, but certainly most of it.

Great refurb. I just picked up a 1200 (I think) tonight with 13 bars as well. Burners, FBs and grates appear in good condition but the grill was used a lot and my guess NEVER cleaned so I've got a lot of work ahead.
