Freezer for my garage

My "swing" over the past 24hrs. in the garage freezer is from -6F to +4F, indoors for -7F to +15F. We use the indoor freezer for short term storage, the garage freezer for long term. I am good with that.

Our upright freezer in the garage runs between -4 to +1 very consistent. I've had a few vacuum sealed items in it for over a year and they've been fine when I used them.

Personally, I think that a good vacuum sealed package will last better at 0 F than a simple freezer paper wrapped package at -10 F or lower. All about preventing sublimation, i.e. freezer burn.

I saran wrap the meat cuts very tightly and then label the item and place inside a plastic bag ( some use a plastic straw to take out as much air as possible ). out so this way I can take out 1 or 2 pork chops etc. at a time and put the rest back in the freezer, they are generally good for close to 6 months this way. If I want to hold meat products for longer I will vacuum seal them , especially steaks because the fluctuation in seasonal prices. If you just wrap in freezer paper you have a chance of freezer burn at the corners of the packages where the air can enter and cause freezer burn.IMG_1402.JPG

Unfortunately, I don't know if https://webstaurantstore.com ships to Canada. I've found good vacuum sealer bags & media cheaper than Zip-loc branded freezer bags. At that point, I seal individually.
Yes they ship to Canada but they have a $39.14 shipping charge on $61.99 worth of bags , shipping costs to Canada are brutal . I bought a special Rapala fishing lure from Estonia Europe that the shipping charge was cheaper than if I bought the same lure through e-Bay from a USA retailer.

My new chest is on the left. - 3 to 0. The 0 was yesterday evening moving stuff around, otherwise it has been steady in the - 3 to - 2 range.

I put the probe in the freezer of the GE side by side in my garage. I put the probe on a shelf in the back. I have not opened the door for over 24 hours and the range is -10 to 13. I presume the swing up is the auto defrost cycle.

Hey, @DanHoo , what did your Kill-O-Watt meter say about power usage? I'm afraid to test mine, and after 30 or so years it wouldn't matter much...the wife wouldn't let me get rid of it anyway.

webstaurantstore has good prices and very quick service but become pretty expensive when you factor in the shipping. I can get shipping rates for quite a bit cheaper if I was sending the same items to them and I know they get much better rates than me due to their volume.
It's often worth it to check out other sources if you're not in a hurry.

You have to check each line item. I haven't figured out the methodology, but some items get a very high S&H fee, others don't.

I will say that their customer service is top notch. I ordered some [semi-]disposable chafing tray kits (metal frame, a couple of disposable tin foil pans, etc.) and one of the kits came in pretty bent up, to the point of the tin foil pans getting holes fractured in them. I took pics, got online to customer service and instantly, as soon as they saw the pics, it was "refund, replace or online credit? Keep what ya got." I already had stacks of replacement pans, so it all worked out in my favor.

I moved my watt meter to the new freezer and it's been connected for about 3 days. Temps in the garage is mid to high 50F.

Over time I'll get more accurate data as this is an extrapolation based on 2 to 3 days of usage.

Monthly energy is 21.60 KWh
Annual energy 259.2 KWh

Using 34.7 cents / KWh ( high end, summer rate) cost is about $90 per year.

It will be interesting to see how much the power consumption goes up when the garage is 70F or 80F

Interesting that the energy guide sticker lists 297 KWh / year. Maybe my 260 is a little low once it warms up. We'll see.

And 12cents / KWh? as a national average? Really? They must not have included PG&E customers in that statistic.
