For the Popcorn Lovers....

I just found a new way to make popcorn - it might be my favorite yet!

http://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2012/09/microwave-popcorn-no-bag-required.html

I've had an air popper for years - it works but there are pitfalls.

For the last few years I've been doing it on a pot on the stove. It works well too, but it's easy to mess up.

I just tried this after seeing something about it not too long ago, and I was happy to see it work! My setup was very similar to hers - pyrex mixing bowl and a microwave safe plate. My only mistake was too many kernels for the bowl - they overfilled the bowl & compressed against the plate trying to lift it.

Try it the next time you want some popcorn

Ya, well. You enjoy it buddy. I've got an old corn popper that is a thin-walled aluminum pot with a lid that sits on a little burner that my mother got me as a present when I was just a wee kernel (yuk yuk). Uses oil as you would expect and after 50 years it still works like the day I got it. If you older folks remember a cigarette brand called "Mark 10" (they still make them but different packaging and no coupons), they had coupons you could send in for free gifts (I found this link http://www.retrowow.co.uk/retro_britain/60s/60s_cigarettes.php It's for Britain but a lot of it is applicable to Canada). This popper was one of them.

As I got older, using oil for this sort of thing was supposed to be passe when air poppers became all the rage. Less calories, etc etc so my trusty oil popper got relegated to the storage cupboard.

Well, I gotta tell you that air popper may be healthier (in that there's no oil), but it can't hold a candle to popcorn popped in oil. Put all the butter you want on that air popped stuff, it still doesn't taste nearly as good as the original.

Thanks for the tip Clint but I'll stick to the stuff that tastes the best. That popper even came with a recipe booklet--make caramel corn, even peanut butter.

p.s. And I still use butter on that oily-popped corn too. ;)

Agree with Len, air or no oil popped is the pits, to us at least.
We've used a Nordic Ware Micro popper for years, always with oil
Coconut oil, white popcorn, and Flavacol for the seasoning.
All available at Amazon, but Target should have the popper for under ten bucks.
Edit to add, some folks turn air poppers into coffee bean roasters.
Another edit, that's a dandy Len, had one similar years ago and loved it.

that's a freakin heirloom :)

Bob, I'm running out the door - but that looks similar (microwave)?

I've used a lot of coconut oil & flavocol - good stuff. Last night I used sea salt, butter (2T went a long way), hot sauce, fresh garlic, black pepper..... I used too much butter as the topping to tell it was air popped :)

You can also put popcorn in a paper sack with kernels in it, seal the end and put it in the microwave to pop it. I like the stove method with a little coconut oil, I don't add butter to mine so the oil from the cooking process helps the salt to stick.

As a side I went to Trader Joes yesterday and they had these bags of popcorn called Popcorn in a Pickle. Of course I had to get one to try, really good stuff, tasted just like pickles.

Be careful using paper bags though. I've read that some bags have metal threads/shavings/whatevers in them to add strength. Not good to use in a m.w.

All at once and you still have popcorn FLAVOUR ? Amazing.

I'd been missing Butter from my fridge for at least a year.......it'd been absent until I had a crab boil a couple weeks ago. The popcorn was just a carrier for it ;). I liked it enough to post it :) Good stuff I thought.

I am still popping with a 1948 Sears Kenmore electric popper that was a wedding present for my mom and dad back in 48. I use a little peanut oil, and it works just like it did
when I was a little kid. I tried air poppers, stove top, and microwave, but end up going back to the old Kenmore. It just works for me.

I tried this again, this time I added 1/3 cup of kernels & 3 tbsp of salted maple syrup..... I'll tweak it to see if I can get it to work but not too bad for a first try.

There's something about the artificial flavor in Flavacol...I worked a food service outlet in college and we used it in the popcorn machine. It drew people like a magnet from all over campus to buy our popcorn. :D

Especially when combined with coconut oil.......... found that combo here within the last few years...

Anyone have a good kettle corn recipe?

I'm sure the Recipe Requests & Ingredients Questions is probably more suitable than Just Conversation, but it's Popcorn on a BBQ site so lay off me!

I saw this but haven't tried it yet: http://www.ebay.com/gds/Crunchy-Car...0205754179/g.html?roken2=ti.pRG9ubmEgRWxpY2s=

"2 (3.5 ounce) packages microwave popcorn, popped
¾ cup light brown sugar
½ cup butter
½ cup crunchy peanut butter
6 ounces marshmallows
kosher salt
Preheat oven to 300°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
Pour popcorn into a large bowl. In a microwave safe bowl combine butter, brown sugar, and marshmallows. Cook 1 minute at a time in the microwave, stirring between cook times, until the mixture is melted and smooth. Stir in the peanut butter until well blended. Pour the caramel peanut butter mixture over the popcorn, and stir to coat the popcorn before it cools.
Bake 15 minutes (until crunchy) and sprinkle with salt.
Serve and enjoy!"

I've had one of these for years, and it makes the best popcorn I have ever ate. You can pop corn without oil, or you can add your own, and it doesn't take much. I like using either olive oil, or coconut oil.

One thing about popping corn, it the steam can't vent, the popcorn will be tough to eat. This popper has vents on top to remedy that.
