First cook on the new to us Smokey Joe

Got to thinking about how Barb and I much prefer the taste of a charcoal cook vs a gas cook. Although I love my gasser for the convenience of it especially during the winter months for a quick cook you just can’t beat charcoal for its added flavor.

Also for two people the performer due to its size requires a fair amount of charcoal to get the job done and for a two burger 10 minuet cook it’s kind of a waste of charcoal.
So when I spotted a Smokey Joe at a yard sale for five bucks I said why not give it a try.
Sure glad I did, although Barb gave me that look, like really another grill?!?!?!

I did a couple of really nice chuck eyes seasoned with Weber’s Steak ‘n Chop topped off with sautéed mushrooms and onions and Barb did some ‘gus. The SJ is perfect, used about 1/3 the charcoal of the performer and it cooks just fine, perfect for the two of us and of course our two furry kids.

Wow, what a delicious looking meal Rich. I love my SJ, use it all the time. That is a great find for that price. I've been keeping my eye out as I want to build a Mini WSM. Don't really need it but it looks like a lot of fun!

Build a mini you won't regret it, super stable and very little charcoal needed. I love mine!

Rich - great looking meal - chuckeyes and asparagus - two of my favorites and expertly done sir!

Hard to beat the SJ for a small cook. It puts out great heat for searing and doesn't need a ton of charcoal. If you make a mini wsm with it you can cook a whole lot of food on one micro load of charcoal. Mine will hold 225 for 9 or 10 hours on one load of charcoal (minion) and can cook two large butts. The SJ is a great and versatile piece of equipment...

Regards,

John
