I just finished watching Family Beef, a 90-minute documentary from KXAN-TV in Austin TX. I really enjoyed it, and I think you will, too, if you like Texas barbecue and its history. I knew much of these stories, but not all of them, and found it interesting from several different perspectives. It covers the family feuds between Smitty's and Kreuz, between Black's and Terry Black's, the connection between the two families, and how deaths are affecting family relationships; the up-and-coming Barbs B Q in Lockhart making contemporary barbecue; and the intersection of all these with Daniel Vaughn and the Texas Monthly quadrenial 2025 Top 50 Best Barbecue Restaurant list.

Here's a description from the KXAN website:

"In Texas’ state-designated BBQ capital, two legendary Lockhart families run the town’s most iconic barbecue joints. Decades of interfamily feuds split them apart, with tensions still smoldering, and one conflict burning hotter than ever. Now, these famed establishments face a new challenge: reclaiming their spots on the coveted Texas Monthly Top 50 BBQ list, all while contending with a rising star shaking up the scene. This feature-length documentary explores the town’s well-seasoned culture, sizzling BBQ ecosystem, and the family rivalries that have marinated in Lockhart lore for generations. Watch Family Beef starting June 5 on the free KXAN+ app and online at KXAN.com."

We watched this the other night, and thought it was pretty fun, while sort of strange at the same time. I thought it was going to be more of a documentary, yet it almost had the feeling of a reality TV show, where it's supposed to 'real', but actually is kind of scripted, in the sense roles are created for each individual? Regardless, thanks for the heads up - we enjoyed the story.....
