Did anyone ever hear what this "big announcement" from Weber was all about?

Looks like a new griddle.
Dang it, that was my take away from the videos. I should have said it.
That’s not for me, but I look forward to seeing it in action.
On that note for those of you who have said the slate steel is no big deal the older versions are on sale for very cheap.
$300ish at my Orchard Supply. $349 at ACE.

IMO, it is drastically over priced, regardless I was able to buy a Blackstone 22 Adventure Ready Black Friday deal for $99 a few years ago. I haven't even used it yet, I need to get the propane bottle filled!

I think they may need to redefine the "Big" in Big Announcement;-) Looks nice but not earth shattering. I like the handles, raised edges, and guard in front of drip tray. The "Case hardened" seams really good (time will tell if it makes a difference over high carbon). Hard to believe for the price the drip cup is "extra" and I did not even see it listed.

I don't even see the "drip cup" mentioned in the ad either.

I was thinking you just shove the grease down the hole into the abyss of the grill bottom for later cleaning or perhaps you put a foil pan below.

Price aside, I actually really like the idea. Raised edges look like a fantastic idea. Handles look nice. Will I buy it? Probably not, I don't use my performer in that manner and prefer the gas options I have. I also think I may be in the minority thinking that Blackstone is close to junk. Serves it's purpose, but not overly well made or built to last, at least the ones I've seen. So Blackstone isn't really an option for me, but I understand why people like them

Too late for me to consider. My Kettles are for charcoal bliss/grill marks and my Traveler has evolved into essentially my dedicated griddle.
