Cost of meat

Was at Costco yesterday. Anyone notice the difference in cost of beef and drop in quality? They were charging $23.99 per lb on Prime ribeye and strips and the quality of what was on the shelf was not even up to Choice IMO and the Choice stuff looked like Select or Cutter grade. Needless to say I did not buy. I am going to look at Sam's today

I didn’t see any difference when I went last time, going to Costco this morning (with my wife, eeek) freezer is close to needing duct tape to stay closed so, I doubt I will be buying much meat but, I will look.
Then this afternoon my son in law wants me to see something he’s considering for me for Christmas but, wants to make sure I like it so, I will snoop there too! I hate picking out my own presents then have to be surprised in a month when I open it, oh well.

Yep, beef is expensive. We don't buy it unless we can get a super price on it. Got some bone in NY strip steaks for $2.97Lb at Safeway on sale along with Barbs discount a few days ago.
But pork and chicken seem to be staying down in price.
My two freezers are like Tim's, totally stuffed.

Just got back from Costco, prime ribeyes were $18.99 and downright beautiful! Must just be you Larry! They’re gunning for you! Had I had three inches of space in the freezer, should have just gotten a pair and had them for dinner!

costco prime ribeyes have been rising in price compared to sams. I agree that the quality of the prime isn't much off than the select. Consider picking up some prime angus steaks at sams.

What I still don't understand is why the steaks looks bigger and better quality when it's cut vs buying it as a slab. I've purchased both before and the slabs are smaller and not that much marbleing

Our Harris Teeter has dry aged steaks that go for $19.99 a pound, $29.99 for CAB.
We get one every now and then, but not sure if I'd shell out that much for a prime one.
I'd be afraid of messing it up!

Don't forget about the Seasonal Rack of Pork at Costco, made me forget all about the over priced ribeye roast last year..
My Costco will have them in stock this week...i'll be stocking up on a few of these...

Well to add insult to injury I went to Sam's yesterday. Needed some other things. Some things of note. Paper products - none to be found. So people must be $&*tting themselves again and then cleaning up the whole mess they make with paper towels. The proteins area (meat, chicken, fish, etc) looked like the photos you see of a North Korean grocery store. Bottled water going the way of the Dodo Bird as well. Of course people were in there with the huge flat carts loaded to the breaking point with cases of bottled water. I mean.............COME ON! The water faucets are still working, this isn't Flint MI our area has some of the best tap (from Artesian Wells) water in the country. Everything completely picked clean. I am soooooooooo tired of this crap. Stupid me because I was being nice to daughter on her first house and she's prego again, I asked her if she needed anything a couple weeks ago from Sam's or Costco. Well "oh I am low on paper towels" so I wasn't going to be at the stores for awhile and wife gave them a whole unopened package that I had just bought because we'd been running low. Figuring it's easier for me to get them. Well now we're low but the kid isn't. Scuse me while I go slam my head for awhile to make the pain go away :D

Same here with respect to paper products, crazy! I don’t think diarrhea is going to run rampant, people need to take a minute and breathe!
As for ribeyes, the choice at Sams looked as good (if not better) than Costco. Downright beautiful, I know what’s for dinner tomorrow.
I will make room for the rest.

I would of talked to a manager. Maybe whoever is labeling the meat messed up, or didn't care.

It was pretty darned good!
I will not share the charcoal steak my wife prefers.
Hangs head in shame, walking away hands in pockets.
Mine could have been three minutes less for me but, I will accept it.
Would the “Prime” from Costco been better? I’m not very sure about that.
Serious F-18 Superhornet afterburner Vortex heat which worked in about 8 minutes

Funny this thread appeared....

I bought and cooked 17.5 lb brisket from costco last week.

I told my wife.....this is over graded.....not prime. I probably trimmed the least amount of fat off that brisket that I had ever trimmed off a brisket. It didn't fit in the wsm-18 even with a rib rack under it.

I've had 19 plus pounders that fit better. After trimming the 17.5 was still huge. It simply didn't have much fat on it. It never shrunk up enough to fit between the handles.....

And like I expected, the point rendered out very well. Good eating and a good brisket. But it wasn't prime. It didn't have the marbling particularly even in the point.

But to me that actually makes a better brisket for the point so I was not disappointed.

Your wife is like mine as well? I swear what she makes me do to a steak makes me wanna just cry. And to add insult to injury she'll ask if the grill is "still on?". If a little juice comes out she throws it back on and burns it some more.

Larry, I’ve just started cutting one from the three pack in half (thickness wise) and cook it the same length of time, mine was just a touch less rare than I generally like but, it was acceptable.
