Cody's Corner of Random Rehabbing & Shenanigans

Funny thing. I never was on a school bus until I chaperoned a field trip when my oldest daughter was either in Kindergarten or 1st grade. Put in perspective she just turned 37 in July. I rode the Green Limousine service to school ( the CTA ) :D I even had to buy my pass! Good thing was if I missed a bus another came along in 10 min or so. So I was well in my 40s LOL

Cody,
From this pic you posted I see you store all of shelves in a tub. I like this idea very much.
Are you removing all of the brackets and screws and putting them in separate containers or just leaving the screws in the oem screw holes?

I spent some time this weekend doing some herd reduction work, while seeing what all I will have from them.

This is what is going to the scrapper. One good control panel, one nice SS lid (gold), and a sideburner is all that was good. And a rotisserie that looks used twice. Frames were all toast. Along with a bin full of burners, bars and all 3 grease trays.

It can feel so defeating at times like this But that’s what makes this hobby worth it.

The spirit lid will be getting put aside in a dark corner (the liner is flaking away) for the day I have one porcelain coated along with a nice gold lid.

Edit - shockingly the side panels were all in pretty good shape, aside from where the guy rammed massive wood screws thru. But they will work for testing out how the snap in wire rack can work with a cabinet grill.

Finally made some time to put in some grill work.

The frame was in great shape aside from this area looked like hell. When I peeled the sticker, a large portion of paint was in love with the stickers

So I ended up doing some spot planting and stripping.

Already have a cookbox painted and ready to go. Tomorrow morning I hope to assemble it all.

Manifold ready to rock

I’m debating a black Mica (gray) lid, black curved lid, or an SS lid (Genesis gold) with an SS cookbox cover panel.

Quick blast and paint of the grease tray rails with Rustoleum high heat silver (not ultra).

Also made a discovery that the shank that goes into the Weber casters is the same shank as office chair wheel. I may be looking into different caster options vs. these crap-tastic plastic ones!

Cheers 🍻

Nice paint job on that frame. It's weird that the info sticker pulled paint off the frame, those usually come off pretty easily. There are several cheaper options for those plastic casters on Amazon. They might not be better than the original ones, but they are less money and look similar.

Yup. But I’m thinking about the rollerblade style. I have a couple sets of used (rehabbed) wheels. Last year I found a 4 pack of lockers and a 4 pack of identical non locking wheels both for $12/each on prime days or Black Friday deals. I was putting a locker in front and plain one in back. Unfortunately they’re no longer available.

I do on ones that aren’t in this good of shape, and my usual stand I use wasn’t able to use. I also like the uniformity of it all being painted in one… sweep if you will.
I never thought about this before because I always take the frame completely apart to paint it, but then I assume you have to leave the frame bolted together along with the washers or it would fall apart when you flipped it over.

The frame isn’t bolted tight. The screws are mostly screwed in to ensure I get paint all around them all
I like the idea of painting it all together if I can take it apart and clean and do a rust preventative where the frame parts meet and in the tubes. Maybe paint those spots first and then paint the frame all together. Not sure if you do that or a version of that but that's another thing I like about this place. Seeing different ways is always good and makes me think.

Looking great Cody! I'm envious of that nice big space you have to work in!

And I like being able to spray it upside down to ensure coverage in hard to reach spots.

Yes. I’m fortunate to have the shop space I do! I visually look at the joints and connections. This is the first one I’ve done like this. Going forward, what you just said is what I’ll be doing. On the male ends of the frame extensions and the legs, there wasn’t any rust, it was just that brown kinda dust.

I blast the grease tray screws and paint them too. I like the little things.

The blasted and painted grease tray rails installed on the cookbox

Fixed up some old casters (a while back) but I like the older frame inserts, so I update them so they don’t retain water.

I also like to “braid” the igniter wires. Less hanging down the better. And I polished up the fittings on the regulator. IMG_9974.jpeg

I’ve yet to install the blasted and painted tank scale because it’s yet to have the amazing stickers created by the one and only @Jon Tofte

But here it is, with the gray (black mica) lid IMG_9978.jpeg

And here’s the SS lid

IMG_9981.jpeg

I’m torn. The SS looks great! But I’d want to switch the knobs and igniter to black. But I don’t have many black knobs and igniters and being late in the season, not sure how well it will sell.

This is not a keeper. SS or Gray lid?
