Cody's Corner of Random Rehabbing & Shenanigans

I decided with all the random stuff I do, I’ll make a thread so that when I do stuff, and actually remember to take pictures of it that I will post it here. Please anyone feel free to also include your tinkerings or current state of projects!

Here’s a couple lids I finished up yesterday. I have taken a real liking to the SS Genesis Gold lids after finishing this one up. If I ever have a lid porcelain coated, it will be one of these. I really like the handles on these.

And another lid…

Reassembled a couple of tank scales, have several more painted just not assembled. I’m waiting for a day I have patience to put the awesome level indicator stickers from @Jon Tofte on.

And finally got my flip up tables consolidated to one area in my basement. Took a mental note of all the crap I’ve compiled. IMG_9814.jpeg

I’ve been trying to decide if I try and get one or two more listed before the fall. Or if I set my efforts on getting a few done over the winter and trying to capitalize on the spring grill purchasing.

My biggest weakness in rehabbing things has always been cookboxes. Between losing some in a fire awaiting blasting, finding holes and broken castings, it’s been aggravating to say the least. But I’ve got 3 good 1000 frames, 2 B’s and a C frame ready to paint. I have one B cookbox that’s blasted and painted and ready to roll. And another 1000 cookbox that’s paint ready and a few more to pickup from blasting - hopefully this week.

Here’s to hoping I get out of urgent care (son’s sick) so I can get back to working on this stuff, as this was the first weekend of the summer where I didn’t have anything going on and I had a full two days to work on thinning my herd!

Cheers🍻

Doctor chalked it up to allergies and the recent poor air quality.

Yeah Bruce, I think tearing out the liner and having it porcelain coated makes a ton of sense. Someday I will have one done. I have the perfect one for it that isn’t dented but the brushed look it horribly scratched up. Looks like Marvel’s wolverine cleaned it

Yesterday while having lunch with my son after sitting in urgent care for a couple hours (strep test came back negative), this was posted.
After swinging and missing at a couple blue heads the last couple years, I had told myself any opportunity at a blue head I am jumping at!
The inside of this thing is shot, and I could tell it from the pics. The frame looked surprisingly solid and the control panel looked good enough. So all the boxes were checked.
I messaged him and he replied immediately, so it’s a bit more than a half hour drive that felt like an eternity. I pulled up and it was still in his garage, I got about ten feet from it and all my excitement of this blue head journey was finally coming to fruition fell to the floor.
Dead center in the top of the lid was this rotten looking spot 😭

Think Gone in Sixty Seconds - blue heads are now my Eleanor.

We talked and negotiated further so I did come home with it. However the lid pin was seized in there real good. So I removed that side end cap and handle and while trying to get the end cap off, snapped the end cap. Not the junked out cookbox with a massive hole in it. Not a biggie, as I have spares but it’s just some sort of poetic justice to seal the journey…

I wouldn't be above treating with some rust remover and VERY carefully applying a dab of high heat blue paint. No, it won't disappear, but it would be much less obvious. Not worth it on a dime a dozen plain black hood, but for a blue...

Agreed. I am taking this as a learning experience, and I’ll for sure be doing some “touch up” on it. It was very deflating. Because as you can see in the ad pic, the lid looked gorgeous. He didn’t have any pics of the top of it or I never would’ve driven there.

Finally got around to wrapping up part of my weekend doings. White wall style got the usual 2X Black semi-gloss.
IMG_9837.jpeg

Daisy’s I wanted to try something else because I have plenty and they’re very easy to prep. I used 2X Canyon Black in satin.
IMG_9836.jpeg

The inserts were all sanded and painted with 2X White in semi-gloss.

Obviously with the conditions being humid, I did what in the industry we call a tack coat, light and kind of grainy, allowed it to flash about 10-15, repeated another tack coat and another 10-15 min and a nicer finish (flow) coat for texture. It looked like the plastics was really soaking it up so I’ll have to see in the morning how they look. I think I’m really going to like the look of the satin.

You’ll notice the odd extra insert, I dropped one and cracked it 🤦🏻‍♂️

I’m torn between the two… now I think I’ll have to spray a couple of the white walls in satin. IMG_9840.jpegIMG_9841.jpeg

It doesn’t show up as well in pics. Having seen a couple brand new wheels courtesy of @Steve Hoch they are in fact shiny.

Thoughts?

I think I like the satin better, but both look very good. A great way to bring back old wheels!
Thanks Jon! I’m not sure if you saw what I did to a couple of junk wheels to make the sanding of inserts easier.

I ground off the high areas adjacent to where the inserts set to make them easier to hold and to reach all parts of to sand down, especially helpful with the white walls with how fragile they can be!

I have since bored out the holes that the clips go in slightly to make them easier to pop in and out.
