Beer.

Spent 4th of July weekend in England - took all of my willpower not to sing the Star Spanlged Banner on my train on the 4th - but did stop into a pub near Buckingham Palace for an English beer. Figured I’d go for the real experience…..bitter, flat and warm. Let’s just say it was my first - and last.

Hope everyone is having a good Saturday.

Went to Hodad's Burgers & Brew in Ocean Beach yesterday. They've been featured on Diner's, Drive Ins, and Dives for good burgers, but they also brew a couple of their own beers (off-site in San Diego).

I like the picture!

Sorry to hear your experience. I've been to the UK several times for vacation and work. Ales are definitely different, but there are some exceptionally good beers like the higher ABV Bitters, imo.

Several years ago, my g/f & I took a trip to London for 10 days. We lucked out by being able to attend the Great British Beer Festival in Kent Garden. Something north of 600 different fermentations to sample, and I learned that what we Colonials consider a dry is considered by the Brits to be a semi-dry at best. A British dry cider is practically devoid of any residual sweetness, the yeast has consumed all of the sugars and other fermentables, leaving behind water, alcohol and the remaining apple flavor compounds. A little dry for my tastes. All in all, a very enjoyable experience, and I do recommend this sort of thing if you get the opportunity.

My personal tastes do run to the English ales, malty, and fairly lowly hopped.

Does anyone have a good brewery recommendation somewhat near Chicago? I'm staying in Westchester for two days.

Community Brewery seems good as it's near the hotel, and it also has Old Style. So I can try both the brewery's beer, and Old Style.

They seem to lack porters, stouts, and ambers. So something that focuses on that would give me a broader range, between two breweries.

So I think for Community Brewery, I'd go one Old Style, one Garden Grove, and one pale ale or IPA. Of course I might change my mind once I'm actually there, or after having one or two of those above mentioned, and get more IPAs or something.

Then another brewery for the other styles mentioned.

I left the city long before this craft beer craze came out. So, I am not of any help as now as much as I loved living in Chicago I don't got there any more unless absolutely necessary

The only community brewery I know is in Bridgeport and Logan square. Marz Community Brewery. My Son has been to the Southside one before sox games, they enjoyed it. Going to a brewery to have an Old Style is like asking for a bud lite or miller. You can go to any bar and get that.

I know, but it just helps narrow down the time spent searching for stuff if I already know a place that has Old Style. I'm there for less than 40 hours.

Maybe one of the food places will have it and I'll have already have tried it before going to Community Brewery.

This was the Community Brewery I was referring to. Sorry I forgot the name was Hop District.

Ok, looks like Marz has a milk stout named "I Love Pretty Cool". That will take care of the porter / stout option, thanks.

Check out Sawa's Old Warsaw Restaurant if you like Eastern European food.
They have good Polish beer.
Also Old Style makes a really good Octoberfest edition.

If you like lager beers, I highly recommend Goldfinger Brewing Company in Downers Grove, they only serve lagers.

Near Westchester I suggest Imperial Oak, Buckledown Brewery, and Noon Whistle Brewing.

+1 for Sawa's Old Warsaw Restaurant.

For European sytle restraunts with a great selection of German beers I recommend The Bavarian Lodge in Lisle.
