Ash for smoking?

After reading something on smokinlicious about smoking with Ash in dawned on me that I have a big Ash tree in my front yard. Has anyone smoked with Ash and what's your opinion of it? What is best to smoke with it (beef, poultry, etc.) The big question is that often times I have dead wood I clean off the tree or that actually falls from a storm. This deadwood, is it suitable to smoke with or am I better off triming the tree and letting the wood dry-out for 6 months or so before I use it ???

Ash deadfall is ok. A "light" flavour for fish and beef.

Make sure that it is dry (crack it to make sure it's still not green inside).

AND make sure there is no mold.

I have smoked with ash lots of times. Here where I live I have to use what I can get at the time, there is no smoke wood for sale in shops. Ash works just fine.

I've used some really old Ash and it works fine. My experience jibes with what Len and Geir said.
