Apple, what is happening to you?

So I have been without my Mac Book Pro for four days now, according to the techs at the store either the mother board or the logic board just crapped out. No moisture, no abuse of any kind, no drop, nothing. One morning just would not turn on.
Less than two years old. My BIL has his Mac that is 14 years old and still runs as new.
No warranty of course and will cost a minimum of $ 285.00 to repair. If they have to replace the above listed parts it could be as high as $985.
My two year old IPhone 6 will not hold a full charge for more than four or five hours. Less if I actually use it during that time.
Sorry, just had to vent. top dollar items that just are not made or designed well enough to be reliable and durable.
God I miss my old Motorola flip phone.

That's how Apple pays for all the rework that's going into their round headquarters being built. I can't tell you how many times they've torn out finished sections, because they want to make changes. It is the biggest engineering joke on the planet, and that's tough to do. We kalifornias just threw down an insane amount of money on our new fancy bay bridge that's "earth quake safe." Only problem, it's already rotting away from the inside out. You miss your flip phone, I miss the old bridge built in the 30's. :)

Bill,

I'd escalate that. Out of warranty or not, you shouldn't have a board crapping out after only two years - especially on a Mac.

Batteries on phones can be pretty finicky. My 6 is still chugging along just fine, but I'm careful about charging - I wait to charge until the battery is pretty low and make sure I charge all the way back to 100% before unplugging. I shut it off overnight, but still get two days use from a single charge. I'd have Apple run some diagnostics on it - you may have a defective battery.

I'm with you on that subject Bill. I don't understand having one USB-C port on the new MacBook, no option for a built-in DVD/CD drive if you want one and upgrading anything inside the computers is not possible. Mac OSX El Capitan has more 1 star reviews than 5 star reviews. I ran Snow Leopard (10.6) until a few months ago...my bank web site said my browser is outdated. I upgraded but lost my CanoScan flatbed film scanner because Canon won't support older products. I'm currently running Mavericks (10.9) but I'm seriously thinking about going back to Snow Leopard and "stealing" Firefox from my wife (that's the browser she uses and stays logged in to). Tim Cook needs to stay home and take care of his house and forget about globetrotting....

edit: just left Mac App Store and El Capitan ratings have changed. Current version (10.11.6) has 8 5-star ratings and 7 1-star, and all versions is 7430 5-star and 6242 1-star ratings. I stand (barely) corrected!

Most lithium ion smart chargers will shut down at full charge to prevent the battery from overheating and doing nasty things, some will not charge again until cycled on/off/on some will monitor the battery and when it drops about 20% it will top it off again.
I was into RC Cars and saw a couple of LIs go up in flames and one explode and destroy a $1000+ RC car.
As far as phones go I have a LG flip phone, no apps, no GPS, no nothing, it's a phone. Battery life in standby is about a week to ten days depending on usage. It's about six years old and still has it's original battery. Works for me.

Li-po and Li-ion batteries will heat up to the point of catching fire or exploding if they are fully charged or fully discharged. That's why you need a "smart" charger" with them. Remember when laptop replacement batteries were catching fire? That's because users were replacing NiCad or NiMh batteries with Li-Pos and the laptop charge/discharge system let the voltage drop too low.

Bill:

This paragraph from Bob's link above may be helpful

However, more and more batteries have a digital calibration tool built into them. These “smart batteries” supposedly reduce the need to calibrate, though it’s still recommended when your battery behaves oddly. If you see the battery percentage on your phone jump around a lot (like you could have sworn it was fully charged, and now it’s at 20%,) it’s time to calibrate it. You don’t want to do this too often though. It’s actually bad for lithium-ion batteries to be regularly drained all the way to 0%. That counts as a full charge cycle, which in turn decreases the battery’s total life.

Maybe a full drain will get you back to normal.

No battery was fine and charged as per the techswhatever controls how voltage going to the motherboard or the boar itself is shorting out blipping power

Got it back today, said logic board developed a "Kernel". Replaced board, wanted $307 with tax. One of the ladies who works there and has helped me before talked the manager into knocking off $100.
A "Kernel"

I am not a tech inclined guy. I just know my four year old Ipad is now pretty worthless as far as performance. I still use it to take pics but it's much too slow or just shuts down on most things. I am very happy with my Samsung phone. Except the charge life has severely reduced after a year.

A "Kernel"
Most likely a microkernel (they require auxiliary code) which makes them larger than monolithic kernels. In short: creates a not-insignificant cost in terms of system efficiency.

Thank you apple for your system efficiency...

CEO Tim Cook is what's happening to the once great Apple, and its not good. He needs to be ousted and replaced with someone with vision.
