Anyone use Rib racks?

yes and no. if i am only doing 2 racks i will cut them in half and use my rack. i don't like the ends of my ribs hanging over the outer hot zone as it dries out the ends.if i do 3 or more racks i roll and tie/skewer them.

I really like the Raichlen Ultimate as pictured at Bed & Bath & Beyond

The extra bars in them keep tiny back ribs upright and being straight up they keep huge back ribs from flopping over one another like they can on the angled slot racks.

My thoughts exactly.

I have a cheapo rack that I got at Lowes, but it serves it's purpose.

WHEN USEING THE RACK, MAKE SURE THE RIBS ARE NOT TOUCHING EACH OTHER. THEY WILL NOT COOK PROPERLY IF THEY ARE TOUCHED AT ALL.

when rolled the ribs touch itself in places and they cook fine for me. i have also heard of people stacking ribs on top of each other and they seemed to cook fine for them as well.

The Raichlen Utilmate Rib Rack is nice if you have tall slabs like beef back ribs but unless you spray it with cooking spray really well, it is a pain to clean.

I have two I bought from HD that work well in the 18.5 wsm. I cut my slabs in halfs and get 6 slabs easy on my wsm. I really do not worry about them touching and foil after about 2 hours or so. Foil for a couple hours and then sauce and serve. Usually done in under 5 hrs. Vince

I wish I saw the rolling and wood to hold it together. For the 4th I smoked

4 racks on my 18 WSM. I cut each slab in half and put on 2 racks. I let them touch and I did see a difference in some of the meet. Did not cook as even as I would have liked. But they were great and a big hit anyway

. This is the fist time I smoked

so many slabs at once. I normally smoke 1 or 2 racks with a Butt or some chicken and have no problem fitting on the grills. The racks are a pain in the neck to clean. This rolling method makes for easy cleaning. I feel so stupid for not thinking about rolling them up

. Well there is next time.

Keep on Smoking

WIlliams-Sonoma used to sell the exact same Raichlen rack in a Stainless Steel version. I have 2 of them and they clean up great in the dishwasher. Great size for beef ribs. One suggestion though. Start with the knuckle of the rib on bottom for the first hour or so and then reverse. That way when the meat swells it will not be difficult to remove from the rack.

hanging off the ends isnt an issue doing low and slow in the 225-250 range. the ends will burn pretty good in the 275-300+ range. i let the ends go where they will.

I use to use a rib rack. Then I got lazy and didn't feel like getting my rib rack out so I rolled three racks and put them on the top grate. I doubt I'll use a rib rack again. I had a similar experience as when I gave up water - clean up was so much easier! No rib rack to clean up makes a big difference to me. I hated cleaning my rib rack. I know I probably could have just stuck the rack in the dishwasher, but I couldn't stand those little bits left over in the crevices of the rib rack.

I don't clean anything - rib rack, grates, or water pan. I just leave it there. Then the next time I'm gonna cook, I throw all three into the gas grill on high for 20 minutes as I'm waiting for my charcoal chimney to light off. They come out perfectly clean.
