Acquired Weber Summer Platinum D6, rebuild help please.

So I acquired this natgas grill. Never owned Weber, but pretty handy. I think it's a Summit Platinum D6, not sure of year. If someone could confirm there's no serial number.

Needs some work bit of work to get back 100%. Mainly everything that burns inside. So looking for some help as to what I need to repair. Catalog part numbers specifically these specific parts.

Also ignition isn't working so do you start with just a switch, or just replace everything.

I'll be posting more pictures as I go any help appreciated.

Sure hope you did not pay much if anything for it. They're not supported by Weber anymore. Looks like it has the dreaded rusted out fire box, the flavorizer bars will cost nearly as much as a new grill (if you can get them). Sadly they're rabbit holes. Really don't want to rain on your parade but these things can suck $$$$ outta you faster than a teenager

I can have flavor bars machined for free, that's an easy one. Really just need these parts and I got the rest.

DC, welcome to the site! The fire box is going to be the biggest issue as they are no longer available. You MIGHT be able to find (or fabricate) what's needed for that "frame" that attaches to the manifold and holds the burners, but I haven't seen that listed at any of the parts houses before. You'll need new crossover burners, and possibly (after inspection) new main burners as well.

I have your exact grill (got mine for free), and I'm pretty sure that I am just going to pirate it for parts to get my Summit Platinum D4 in ship-shape. If you were closer, I'd share any parts I have with you that I'm not going to use......unfortunately, shipping from CA to NY is just not feasible.

It's really unfortunate that Weber made some poor design decisions with the firebox on this grill, and then did not plan (or just decided) for the parts they would need to support the long warranty they supposedly have (mine is still "in warranty", but no parts are available for the warranty service.)

BTW, your grill is likely a 2005/6, but there should be a sticker on the panel below the right side shelf that has a serial number.

Good luck!

R

This front panel which is removable is the only rusted out part on the fire box which is why it's removable I guess. Quite frankly it's the only part I really need everything else is a simple fix for a basic restore. If had to get this fabricated sheet metal shop it would be no problem but if it's accessible somewhere rather just buy it. Rest of the fire box will look brand new when I'm done with.

DionCini,

First let me also say "Welcome to our board." I don't think any of us here want to be negative. It is just that these Summit grills have provided a lot of difficulties to many members here who have owned or tried to restore them. Also, as Rich G said very well, Weber unfortunately made some poor design decisions in designing this grill. This is really a shame, because this special edition of the 2nd generation model you have has Weber's BEST EFFORT in regard to the frame and cabinetry. Those being all 304 stainless will last a very long time.

Because you have the two-year-only Platinum Summit with the stainless frame and cabinetry, I do think yours is worth the extra effort it will take to bring it back. From your comments you either can do sheet metal type work yourself or have access to having it done on the cheap. For most other members that is not an option, so the rebuild cost for a project like this can quickly get way out of hand. But for your situation, if you can fabricate the needed parts and use stainless steel wherever possible, you have the potential to have an awesome grill when you are done.

I certainly wish you every success possible in bringing this grill back. It's great that you will be able to fabricate, since as others have said, parts are really getting tough for this grill. The firebox issue and lack of parts also afflicts the even older 1st generation Summit that I am trying to restore. The early Genesis grills, by comparison, are a lot easier to find parts for because (1) so many more were made and old examples are still around and (2) because they were popular, more companies have jumped in to offer non-OEM replacement parts. There is little of that for these Summits, which means you are often on your own to fabricate or otherwise improvise replacement parts.

Please do keep us posted with pictures of your progress. I, for one, would love to see that Summit back in 100% condition with some nice T-bone steaks sizzling on it!

Really just comes down to local resources, urban or rural you can take sheet metal parts to many different places to repair. Give it to a kid in high school and tell them to bring it to metal shop for repair. Fence installers, sheet metal shop any welder, would fix for pennies. Anything on a grill is very basic, cars, bikes and engines is harder. I was just really wondering if these 2 parts are available. I'm just really surprised reading other threads before I posted this, this is very basic repair compared to others.

So this is the only part that needs fabrication. It can be replicated without being so complex very easily. Unless again there was a website to just buy it. The tube holders look like they will work after I pull them out and clean them up. Is there a video on how to remove the tubes, in sequence?

I’m in the process of a restoration on a 2005 Summit Platinum D6. No cookbox available, I’m getting a new lid under warranty. I fabricated parts to repair the cookbox.

The individual parts that make the cookbox were never made available, only the entire cookbox was offered as a Weber part. I was fortunate to be able to restore mine with fabricated pieces. My only issue now is that damn IR Rotisserie burner that I can’t figure out.

Hey, maybe you two ought to get together! Bill, how many pennies would it take to have you fabricate those pieces for him?

Wow,🏔️
Welcome DionCini, Another option is to have Dave Santana fabricate that piece. I have a Platinum D4 and that same panel he fabricated a 304 SS exact bolt in replacement for $100 + $14 shipping. Better than original. Of course your piece will be more for a D6.
Wow thank you, question how did you remove it without disassembling the box. Had it bend back the bolt tabs and drill a hole so it would pop out one side. I have a better idea so it will slide into the bolts instead of screwing in so it can be easily removed anytime for cleaning.

I didn't realize this was a

Can definitely fabricate a better part than this.
If you can get parts done, and certainly better than original, you could really be a bonus to the community. Not sure why it is so hard, since I do not have one to look at. But I do know that some very talented people have looked into it. I hope you and several others here can really make progress on this.

Good luck to you. I have totally torn down and tried to rebuild this exact model and was unsuccessful, albeit it a half hearted effort by me.

That said, I agree with you. If you have the ability to fabricate the front panel and bottom from SS these can be restored "better than new," however you are still going to run into issues down the road finding burner tubes, sparkers, valves, etc.

You obviously have access to some metalworking. IF you don't need the real-estate of the Summit and want to do something that will have long term support a couple of us have taken that FRAME and installed a Genesis cast aluminum firebox. The fabrication is pretty straight forward and would replace all the serviceable parts with items that are going to be stocked forever.

I may have a couple of parts still hanging around for that model. I know still have the stainless grates, smoker box, drip pan, and stainless front plate. Happy to ship to you if needed.

So started to make some progress, looks like will only need to purchase tubes and full switch kit. And with about 20 hours of work and help from local high school metal shop (flavor bars and front box panel) will be all in for about $320 total. Including the $50 i paid for it. Sorry to disappoint the people that said it was going to be money pit.
