I agree and would gladly take a quality 7mm set over them. With the small contact area on the top of the triangle, may be no better than a 7mm grate. Pass.
I applied a little math and the cross section area of a 9mm triangle and a 7mm circle are almost identical, so I would expect them to have about the same heat retention and perform the same as the mass is really the same.Well, that depends on what you are looking for. Sure, they won't have the wide closely spaced grill marks, but they should create some nice very well defined ones. And with their mass, they have the heat retention that is far better than 7mm grates would provide.
I like those flat bar SS grates! They are the best of both worlds between the stamped and solid rod! I bet you could get some gorgeous sear marks with those!I remember that Costco had a grill 5 or 6 years ago with some dubious aspects, but one thing that was really nice was the stainless grates that were FLAT on the top. I almost bought a junker resale of one of these just to get those grates.
Well, tax season is finally over! So, I had time to go with my wife on a trip to Costco. We had to patrol almost all the aisles, but I was at least able to take a brief look at the grills being offered. I was especially interested because of several posts here about grills others had looked at.
WANNABE Q GRILL
I saw the Nexgrill attempt to make a Q-like grill. Not really that bad in person but an ugly duckling that won't work with regular tanks. I did like the left/right burner configuration. Not enough to dissuade me from my attachment to Q's or to recommend one over a Q...

I am willing to bet that a set of 7mm grates are far less heavy than a set of those 9mm triangle grates which would be a better ((more accurate) measurement of overall mass.I applied a little math and the cross section area of a 9mm triangle and a 7mm circle are almost identical, so I would expect them to have about the same heat retention and perform the same as the mass is really the same.
9mm round rods with 1/8” spacing - 20lbs of grates![]()
I'm with @Bruce on this one. My grill grates are 3/8" (just a bit over 9mm) round stock on 1/2" spacing and I figure that's nearly perfect. A 1/8" gap IMO would be awfully close.LOL. I would call that a "leaky" griddle.
