Vermont Castings VM400 nearby free pickup

For whatever it's worth, I had that exact grill (VM400) (my wife had it before we got married so I inherited it). The lid was very, very heavy, and it had a nice set of cast iron grates, but that was about the extent of the niceness of it. The firebox and legs and all the other important bits...

Anybody have experience with these thermometers?

If anyone's looking for a dual-probe wireless thermometer, there's a lightning deal going on now on Amazon for the ThermoPro TP20: https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B01GE77QT0/tvwb-20

    Found these new inexpensive grills

I hope you're not implying that spending more on a "real" grill is necessary. I can respect someone wanting or thinking they need only the absolute top of the line BUT in the end does it really make that much difference? :-)

Anybody have experience with these thermometers?

If the Thermopro had been available when I got mine, I'm pretty certain I would have gotten that instead. Alas, I don't think there was anything comparable at the time. I do think my Thermapen will probably be working still 20 years from now, but then again the Thermopro probably will as well...

Anybody have experience with these thermometers?

For whatever it's worth, my wife got me a Thermapen for Christmas 4 or 5 years ago and it's easily my most favorite kitchen/grill gadget. I wholeheartedly agree that $100 is really steep (I think she got mine on sale for $80, but still)... but honestly every time I use it I still think it's...

I will just leave this here

Did a quick look at Weber.com, and sure enough, it's not a cobble job... as I suspected, it's a permanent mount Silver. (I have no interest in this thing; just thought the unusual base and condiment basket were interesting)

I will just leave this here

What's the deal with this one? https://chicago.craigslist.org/nwc/app/d/buffalo-grove-weber-natural-gas-grill/6941618575.html I nearly looked right over it but then noticed the frame looks odd and there's a condiment basket on the side? Is this a fixed-mount frame or something? {edit} Picture...

    Lodge CI Griddle placement

I've used that exact griddle on my silver B both parallel and perpendicular to the burners. I've never measured the temperature, but I don't recall there being much difference either way. Most often I use it parallel to the burners pulled towards the front of the grill such that the first and...

Hard to believe all the older grills you guys are finding.

There's absolutely tons of (overpriced) Silver Bs and Cs here in Chicagoland on Craigslist, but very few x000s. Seems like I saw a lot more last summer, though it's early and the Father's Day replacements probably haven't been listed yet. All the rain here isn't helping either - I'm sure I'm not...

Need Help Rehabbing Mean Green Genesis from 90's

I keep wondering if dusting a freshly-painted piece with sand would work (to get it to stick to the sticky paint) and then putting a finish coat on top. Sand shouldn't have any temperature issues. I suppose the most likely outcome would just be a big mess though.

    QuliMetal Grates

Yeah, I've been really pleased with them. I have not seen a set of RCP grates in person so I can't say for sure how they compare, but regardless I'm happy.

    QuliMetal Grates

I just checked my 8mm BBQParts grates with a strong magnet and I didn't feel any pull from it.

    Prime rehabbers weekend

Plenty of stuff popping up here, however nearly all of it looks overpriced to me. I think it then becomes a compounding problem because new sellers do a search to see what's out there when they list and set their prices similarly. Lots of dilapidated old 1000s are being listed for $50, $100 or...

    Grates upside down?

Of course everyone is entitled to their opinions. However, according to Bruce, the distance between rods on RCP grates is .415". The distance between my BBQParts grates is .428". I think it's going a bit far to say that a difference of .013" makes the difference between universal praise (RCP...

    Grates upside down?

Yeah, not sure on that one. I don't think the Hongso ones were available when I purchased mine from BBQParts. I see both Hongso and BBQ claim 304 Stainless so they're probably the same material. The Hongso ones say 7mm while BBQ's are 8mm, so a small difference there. Overall though not much...

    Grates upside down?

I assume Greg is talking about the grates on this page (second one down, listed as "CG48"): https://bbqparts.com/silverb.htm. I have a set on my Silver B and I just checked and their specs are accurate: the rods are 5/16" or about 8mm, the gap between rods is about 11mm/.43", and there are 16...

    Frame paint options?

Just to be clear, I'm no painting expert. I've sprayed a few things with a compressor and relatively inexpensive spray gun before, that's all. Basically just checking to see if anyone has ever tried anything other than spraypaint cans for the frame or box. Sounds like no at this point. I might...

    Frame paint options?

Yeah, it's really 2 things: with all the parts on the 5000 it seems like you could go through a bunch of spray cans which is a hassle, plus it would be interesting to know if spraying something like what you linked would lead to a better or more durable finish. Hard to know if the finish when...

    Frame paint options?

Starting to think about my upcoming Gen5000 restoration. Just for the heck of it, I'd like to do it as nicely as possible. Has anyone ever done anything other than rattle-can paint on the frame before? I have an air sprayer that I've used to paint cars and things like that before and I'm...
