I did purchase fire bricks, but I needed an additional brick and ended up grabbing a paving brick I had laying around...the kind used for constructing driveways from. I have never had a problem with it, and have used it quite a bit.

Your charcoal ring must be a bit smaller than mine. The larger gaps at the ends of the grate are exposed at both ends of mine. It forms a gap at both ends larger than that between the rest of the grate rods. Big deal? Not really. A few small pieces of lump falling through is nothing to cry...

I stand corrected on the vent issue if it is the 22" model in qwuestion. It's not a problem in the '09 18".
