OK so i pull in the driveway after work yestrday and the "Big Box" is on my porch!
I open it up and my trusty Golden and I assemble the 18.5 WSM. I place it in our pavilion and show it off to the family.
Then I go to bed wondering if I should have bought the 22.5..........
Yeah I just ordered the 22.5 and I'm taking the 18.5 back!
Sure wanted to Smoke this weekend but will have to wait for it to arrive.
Am I nuts or are you all just making me that way!??????

Go big or go home! My husband thought I was a little crazy for getting the 22.5 for my first smoker, but I didn't want to regret it later and have to spend $400 on a new one.

Alyssa, after following your maiden journey yesterday I was really torn. I am a family hero for my baby back ribs off my performer so I really want to be able to produce some kick azz ribs off this smoker. I was afraid the ends would be to close to the side of the 18.
Oh and also thanks as I bought a wireless maverick et132 last night on amazon!
Yeah go big! lol.....

I have both sized WSMs and I use them both. If I had to have only one, I'd have the 22 1/2" model.
Congrats and good luck with it!

Yeah i agree your doing the right thing, i just got me a 18.5" why.......cus we cant get the 22.5" here in Oz otherwise that's what i would have bought.........its a guy thing bigger is better :D

I returned the 18.5 tonight, at the counter they said what's wrong with it? I said nothing, I just want the bigger one. Now mind you this is all put together and setting up on a flat cart that itself is 10 inches off the ground. She looked again and said Bigger!?

I had a 18.5 - it worked really great - in fact, I kind of still have it - I moved it to my folk's house 11 hours away. My Dad has smoked almonds on it, but that's about it - on the other hand, when I'm visiting, I can do ribs, briskets and butts.

I have a 22.5 on my deck - I just started using lump charcoal - had an overnight cook and needed to add some fuel - I basically opened the door, stuck the open end of a bag in and "urged" the lump on top of the embers - did I risk ash coming up - yep - did it affect anything - not that I could tell - cooking pork butt on the lower grate, brisket on the top. There is no way I could do that with the old style 18.5 and I'd bet the new style 18.5 with the stock water pan would be worse.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I told the wife tonight we're gonna get an 18" for the RV....but I hate to do that cause that's what the mini is for. LOL I LOVE the 22" and think you will as well. Congrats!

I love the 22. I can place 3 uncut spare ribs flat on one grate. I went through the same debate but thanks to the great debate thread here and the capacity pictures on the main site it was an easy decision. You can always put less food on but it is difficult to increase capacity.

you can use the door on 22 to put food in. Not so much on 18. I have both 18 and 22 and use both of those.

I wish I could laugh but I'm a bit jealous. Congrats!!!
Don't forget to post your first cook on the 22.5 WSM.

Thanks everybody, don't know why I just did not order it first time around....newbie!
But once the "Smoke" cleared...... I was able to clearly see the light!!!!
Just wish it was here.....maybe the Smoke Gods will make it get here before the weekend....
Thanks for all the HUGE knoweldge.
Al

Weekend weather looks great for Upstate NY, have a party planned for Sunday so i'll do a turkey on the performer. If the new 22.5 shows up I'll do some butts.
Saturday is looking like a nice day to go do some trimming on the Apple Trees ;)

Save the apple wood , it is great for smoking pork and chix. Nice fist size pieces of wood would be nice.
Just my 2c =)
