WSM 14.5" Charcoal Ring & Grate.

Hi.

Could somebody please measure the height of the charcoal ring in the WSM 14.5", and also the diameter of the charcoal grate. I'm currently working away from home, [so no access to my smoker], & there is a bunch of welders and miles of expanded metal here. I want to fab a new charcoal ring. Thanks in advance. :)

Van.

Thanks for the link, [why didn't I think of that?], & info.....perfect!
:wsm22:

ps. Looking through the info, I see there is a heat shield. I never got one of those. [???]. :( I wonder if I could call Weber, & they would send me one?

I bought my 14.5 new & the heat shield was missing, too. Called customer service & they sent me one rather quickly, iirc. Have you registered the 14.5?

A lot of folks remove the heat shield Tony. ...but you should have received one.

Dwain. I do recall getting a heat shield with the SJ, or was it the JJ?, [dunno where it went.]. But not with the WSM. I was thinking of using the heat shield to catch the ash & assist with clean up. Anyway, I've been onto Weber & they are on the case.

I have registered the smoker, but as I mentioned I'm away from home just now for the next couple of weeks and cannot access the serial number.

I used to work at a facility with a roll former. Will you be rolling your own ring by hand, or do you have a machine to do it?

Rusty. I will draw out the circumference with pipe chalk on a welder's bench, then tack weld four pieces of 1" pipe at four points just within the circle. Tack the expanded metal to one piece of pipe & hand bend the expanded metal around the other three and then weld up the seam. Bob's yer Uncle. I don't have access to a roll former.

Sounds like a winner. Eight pieces of pipe would be better, but four should work nicely.

I miss having access to fabrication machines. I used to operate a CNC oxy-fuel / plasma burn table, and I could design & burn just about any any shape I wanted to on thin or thick metal. We had drill presses, press brakes, saws, shears, punch presses, etc., available.

Those CNC machines & plasma cutters are The Business!! You can make up some really nice pieces out of 316 with those.

We had 316 and 306 stainless steel, plus aluminum and a host of other metals. Most of my burning consisted of A36 carbon steel, and hard stuff up to 500 Brinell. You wouldn't believe some the setups I had to do. It was more than just burning plate metal. I burned a lot of angles, channels, I-beams, and flat bar stock on the CNC table following layout lines. Sometimes, I had to do vertical hand torch work on assembled machine builds.

Prior to that, I worked in a department that did soldering, silver soldering, and brass brazing on various gauges of wire cloth.

Never a dull moment.

Weber have got back to me, & state the 14.5" Smoker doesn not come with a heat shield, only the two larger models. [Dunno if the US 14.5" smokers come supplied with a heat shield or not, but in UK apparently not].

You don't need it. Really. It takes up space that could be used for ashes on long cooks. Maybe cut a piece of metal & place it below the charcoal bowl, if you are worried about the surface below the cooker.
