Where do you guys buy your wood ? online ? or at the big box stores and what is the avg price
i'm finding it at the local hardware store and sems to be alittle expensive thanks guys

Mesquite and Hickory can be found in the big boxes. Home Depot/Menards. I have a BBQ store here that I just started shopping at and he has a good selection of other wood at competitive prices. Hardware stores will be a tad higher but if local, I like to support them too.

Where ya located Danny? Local firewood dealers and orchards are a cheap alternative.

Dan, check out doitbest.com
tax free, shipping free to your local hardware store. you just order it then a few days later, pick it up.
10 pounds 9 bucks of apple, pecan, cherry, hickory, mestake... chunks or chips... best deal around unless you get it free.

I've bought from Smokinlicious in the past and been quite pleased with their quality. Just ordered from Fruita wood chunks a couple weeks ago and their wood looks nice. I'll be trying it for the first time this weekend.

I get sugar maple from my backyard. Apple and cherry from my SIL's backyard and red oak from assorted peoples wood piles. Mesquite and hickory I buy from the Big Box places. I used to get apple free from orchards in the area until my SIL moved to her hobby farm.

I've had good luck with Hawgeyes BBQ, it's a local place for me, the wood is usually nicely chunked and clean prices seem fair, they have a online store good luck.

You can save a good bit buying locally, and avoid kiln dried for longer smoke.

The other thing is that you can know exactly what you're getting. When I mention using "oak-ry", I'm not speaking of mixing ?? species of hickory with ?? species of oak that come from the store. I'm using a hickory noted for great flavor, shaggy bark, not one of the more bitter hickories. The oak in my pile is all white oak right now, and also pretty mellow as oak goes. I want to find some red oak for smoking tri-tip pretty soon though since it has a stronger flavor.

If you have Academy Sports near you, they carry bags of apple, cherry, hickory, pear and mesquite. It's always good to put out feelers with friends/relatives about needing wood for smoking. Someone is always cutting down a nuisance tree or has storm damaged trees that they're cutting down. I got a ton of maple and pecan that way.

I was shocked to find apple chunks at Home Depot in Niles, Illinois (Chicago burb) a couple weeks ago. Then, a week later, my jaw hit the floor when I found cherry chunks(!) at the local Menards. Previously, I'd only seen hickory and mesquite chunks and fruitwood chips at these stores.

I haven't tried the cherry yet but the apple is a really nice, mellow smoke compared to my usual hickory.

I usually scrounge around and get the occasional branch from a friend when a storm knocks down a branch, or when someone takes down a tree. Wild cherry, plum, hickory, etc.

I have found Apple, Cherry, Pecan, & Hickory at my local Menard's & Meijer stores in both varieties of wood chunks and wood chips. Menard's seems to have the larger selection and cheaper prices.

If you have a Bass Pro shop near you, they usually have a decent selection of smoke wood chips and chunks too.
