Why has bacon gotten so expensive?

We were buying Oscar Meyer bacon for less than $4/lb. Now it is more like $5/lb. Does anyone know why it has gotten so much higher?
 
Demand, maybe? Pork belly's been a hot item in the restaurant world the past few years and if more of it's being directed into the commercial market there might be less bacon for the consumer.
 
It may be because of supply and demand, but my guess it has more to do with wholesale versus retail prices. The savings businesses get at wholesale prices are recouped by retail customers.
 
One of the national fast food chains is advertising smoked belly and I imagine that might have some effect on the supply.
 
Have you tried some of the other local brands? Oscar Mayer might be charging more to help save
