Which Thermometer you running?

Looking to get one that fits on the side of the WSMC 22.5 in the grommet location.

Just purchased for the Slit in the Grommet the Maverick ET-733

Which one are you using the small hole:)

The grommet has two types of holes. There is one that is just a "pin" hole. I have started just taking my Maverick 733 pit temp probe and pushing it almost all the way in the pin hole. This puts the probe just below upper grate and about 5+ inches inside the outer edge. This provides me "close enough for BBQ" temp readings. Someone on one of the two sites recommended that and it works fine.

I use the slotted hole to insert my meat probe and the temp probe for my Pitmaster IQ 120 if I am using it. When using the IQ, and if I have multiple meats, I will insert all three through the slit hole, use the IQ to monitor the pit and both probes in different pieces of meat.

A little off topic...Just a word of caution, be very careful when cleaning the ET-733 probes. I have always tried my best not to let water hit the end of the probe where the wire goes in. I even hold that part with my hand so I know where to stop with the sponge and where not to get water...went to use my ET-733 over the weekend and one of the probes read 'LLL'...looked in the manual and it means one of two things, either the probe got too hot (it's only seen 325 degrees once) or water got into the inside of the probe and ruined the internals. Per the manual, the latter happends about 98% of the time and nothing can fix it. Had to order a new probe. The device only has a 90 day warranty...

What gets me is that there is even a silicone sleeve that is compressed into the end to help keep out water but guess it didn't work. I got the thermo Christmas 2013.

Back on topic...
For my grommet, I only using the slit, for which I insert the probes for the Maverick ET-733 along with my Stoker ATC probes. Don't use the small hole for anything.

Here's the dumb thing I did. I had a brisket cook where the brisket finished at a really low temp for me at 193. I decided to do the boiling water test on the probes. Wasn't paying that much attention and after seeing that yes indeed the probes were correct, realized that one of my probes was in the flames of my gas stove burner! It now reads LLL. Got another one on the way. There went 20 bucks.

I've got the Maverick ET7 and the Maverick 732. I would consider them OK, mostly because of the price. Customer Service at Maverick is in the toilet on a good day. When the Mavericks give up the ghost, I'll replace them with the iCelsius. If I ever buy a Maverick product again, it will be because I lost my mind

Once you try the iCelcius and get used to having 24/7 access via phone or web (you can actually have it post to the Aginova portable so others can watch for you!) you won't ever think of any other thermometer. I'm getting ready to do a nice pork roast dijonnaise and will monitor if from the dock a couple hundred feet away. Love the idea that the temp alarm will go off when it is time to get off my butt and get my butt, er... roast.

Hey Tom- Do you have a link to the iCelcius? I looked an amazon but not sure if I have the correct one. Also, the one on amazon has a cable that attaches to your iPhone or iPad...can't it report wirelessly?

Thanks

I use the Fluke 52 digital thermometer but only because I'm an electrician and already had it. It works great !

Mike, you want the iCelcius WIRELESS. http://www.aginova.com/icelsius-wireless-summary-page.php It is available with a single BBQ probe or a dual. I got both. :) http://www.aginova.com/icelsius_wireless_store.php I use the dual on my WSM with one in the meat (note that it seems you can't go much over 400F or the shrink wrap melts) and the other in the silicone thermo port on the lid. The single one I use for food on the Genesis gasser and will probably use in my Cookshack as there is only a single probe attached to the controller for that smoker.

The probes that connect to your phone have to stay connected to your phone. I am not keen on leaving my phone out overnight. It is possible to get some reporting but then again your smartphone is doing the work on the iCelsius Wireless box.

I use a Maverick ET-732, it works well. Ive had it for 2 years, though I did have to replace the pit probe after about 1 year.
