This is for my so cal members. Where do you guys get wood to smoke? Currently I get it from HD or Lowes...

Some of the higher end end meat markets carry wood too, mostly small logs that need to be cut up though. There is a local place that sells fire wood and they carry red oak so you might want to try those places as well in your area.

What's the name of those higher end meat markets.

Tony,

We buy our wood at The Wood Shed in Orange. Good selection, great people, AND they know BBQ !
You can buy by the bag, the pallet, or truck load. Everything from chips to logs.

John,

Sounds like a trip down SD way is in order !
Iowa Meat Farms looks like an amazing place.

Per a recommendation on this site, I got mine from doitbest.com and they shipped it to my local hardware store for free (only 2 miles away). Cost of 10 pound bags of apple and cherry were the same as 5 pound bags (hickory was about the same) at home depot. The wood looks more uniform as well. I haven't used it yet, so I can't speak for flavor. But so far so good!

I've been able to find a large variety of wood chunks at the local Home Depot, Lowes and Menards. Everything you can imagine except Oak for some reason.

Today I just went to the firewood dealer for fireplaces. I explained my delimma, and he let me go out to the Oak pile. I grabbed about 5 smaller pieces that had the bark removed. He charged $2.00. I got them home, pulled out the table saw and sliced them in approx 2 inch lengths. I ended up with around 15 lbs of great seasoned Oak. In the absence of other alternatives, the local firewood dealer might be an option.

Not from california but I buy from Fruita Woods in Colorado,I recently purchased some nice Cali red oak from Fruita, not to mention there peach and other selections.

The only place I found Oak at is Meijer. But you're source is a steal of a deal. I'll keep that in mind:cool:

another vote for Fruita Wood Chunks. They will custom cut to size if you need it, shipping is fast, and Bert is a pretty nice guy.
