I was out in the yard watching squirrels fight over a few nuts that where on the ground and I thought to myself " hey I wonder what walnut smoke wood be like? " I've gotten apple branches from the neighbours tree but this is the first time its dawned on me to use walnut. Only had the tree for 15 years, sometimes I'm not to quick.

Has anyone smoked with walnut?

Well i know the wood can be used for smoking, but what i wanna know is if i can smoke with the dried nuts(whole with chells).

Will do a test burn and se how it smells.

I have a big tree myself and its to mutch nuts for My family/friends.

But for the wood it sure can be used for smoking,Emilie would freak if she saw me with anything sharp around that tree

Shaun R. loves the Walnut wood for Beef. He gave me a good size piece but I've yet to try it out. If we like it, I'm in in the land of "Fruits and Nuts" and we have a lot of Orchards around us too.

so the supply is available.

Is it strong? I imagine it would be pretty mild. I need to prune it so will save some larger chunks and dry them for a couple months. You actually get nuts? Most of ours disappear off the tree long before it's time to pick them.

Maybe I'll do a test on a small chuck or something.

To be clear.
Mac is probably talking about English walnut.
Don't know where you live Bob, but I assume you're talking about Black walnut.
I've read that Black walnut is strong, and needs milder wood added too.
Not sure about English walnut.

One thread here.

Black can be bitter. It's all right for short grill sessions but I don't care for it for smoking.

Yeah it's a black walnut. I'm in ottawa canada kind of. So probably use just a bit with hickory. I'm trying for a little different flavour but I don't want people gagging on it

That's been my experience although it's been awhile since I used any. I've never used it for anything other than beef.
