Walnut Shells

I have a small bit of walnut shells that I thought could be wrapped in foil and burned to generate smoke. I know I've read that this can be done with pecan shells. Does anybody have first hand experience with walnut?

Haven't heard of walnut shells for smoke, but I recall someone swearing by whole hickory nuts, directly on the coals.

I would think that English walnut shells could be okay, but black walnut shells not so much.

I've never used walnut, but I've read that it can be somewhat heavy and even bitter. That probably holds true for the shells too.

Hey J ...I'd burn/smolder one...if I liked the aroma, then go for it

I've used pecan and peanut shells and they provide a bunch of smoke, but I like them. I disperse them throughout the coals in a minion start.

I had some charcoal that was olive stone/shell based, it was an eco friendly thing.
Lighting it was like cow dung, I had to apologise to the neighbours but it was OK once lit. Not something I'd add for flavour though!

I like to burn allspice berries, star anise pods, cinnamon bark, and pretty much anything that burns. Kevin informed me that they should never ignite or the smoke will get acrid. I always keep them in foil and never had problems.

I was thinking I'd try the packet of walnut shells out on the gasser, because I found a small packet of aromatics goes far in the small volume of the grill.

hmmm, what to try it on?
