Too Hot to "Handle"

With a 22.5" Weber kettle, OTG, I find that the handle on the lid gets to hot to use it. I have to find a glove to insulate my hand from the heat.

I have not yet used more than one Weber chimney of Kingsford briquettes. I bank my coals to one side trying to make a 3-heat fire. I cook with the lid on, but when I need to check on the coals or the food, the handle is too hot to touch. I almost always have the bottom air vents fully open and the wheel on the top about half closed.

Is this normal? Am I doing something wrong? Should the (plastic?) handle be insulating better? If you have encountered this problem and fixed it, what did you do?

FWIW, I never experience this problem on my SJS.

Its a common problem on the newer kettles with the plastic handles. They often get very hot to the touch. Thats why so many people still prefer the wood handles...they don't get that hot. As far as the smokey joe handle not getting that hot, I'm guessing you arent getting as hot of a temp on the small grill, hence the handles don't get as hot.
If you would like to replace those plastic handles with nice new wood ones, contact Brian O'Neal on here. He makes awesome wood handles that are exact duplicates of the originals!

i'm convinced that there's more to it than what meets the eye.

my performer handle doesn't get too hot to touch until the thermometer is pegged or beyond.

however my brother's performer's handle was noticeably hotter while the kettle was around 400 or 500.

perhaps there can be minor differences in the way handles are installed?

I noticed on the new grills they are using the King Ranch handles, and that polished protective dish plate under the handle for extra heat protection. So this must have become a issue.

i keep hearing this - but i've only seen it on the new 26" kettles

Bob,
I get same problem on WSM when i use a charcoal grate in the middle section for high heat. That handle gets HOT!

Hey Troy, the handles on the older performers, the ones with the therm in the handle are actually taller that the usual kettles. Maybe thats why they don't get as hot? Plus those style have that aluminum shroud mayby that acts as a heat sink of sorts? Maybe....

I too have the same problem with my New OTG 22". I have to use a Glove sometimes to remove the lid. Thinking of replacing them with the Wooden ones.

Mine neither.

Hutchins, try the exhaust vent on top fully open and adjust the temp with the bottom vents. Your exhaust vent should always be open equal or greater than your inlet air in take vent.

Thanks for the tip. I have read that before but at my age CRS sets in and stays for a spell.
