The "IGrill" - Replacement for the Maverick ET-732?

So I have been using my Maverick ET-732 for a couple of years with mixed results. I've had temperature probes pull loose and despite the manufacturer's claim that the unit will work from up to 300' between the unit and the receiver, I have rarely found that to be the case. In fact, more often than not I have found that from as close a distance of about 50' the unit loses contact with the receiver, and I am up out of my seat trying to reconnect the 2 units. During a game or other TV show, this can be very disruptive and annoying. During an overnight cook when I'm running 2 BB's, it's a downright PITA for the units to disconnect and the alarm to go off when I'm sleeping.

I saw the IGrill on TV this morning and am wondering if it works the same way as the Maverick (where you can set an alarm for high / low meat temps and a high / low for grate temps). Has anybody used this gadget yet and can we get a review on it? It was hailed on the television show as working very well with an iPhone and I simply GOTTA believe that any technology put out by Apple simply must be better than Maverick technology. Should I make the investment?

Thanks and SMOKE ON!! :wsm:

I have the original iGrill. It works as advertised and will pick up signal as long as Bluetooth stays connected. It does seem to use the iPhone battery up quickly so I keep it plugged in.

I also have the Mav 732. It also works well for me.

Ditto exactly what Dwayne said. I have the original IGrill and the Mav 732. Extremely happy with both. Had a broken probe on my Mav so I was glad I had the IGrill to back things up. I've never had a range problem with either, however I haven't had to need to go out 300 ft. either. Good luck.

I have the original iGrill and enjoy using it with my android phone. There can be a learning curve getting it paired up with your phone and what not but once you get it you're good. Works the same way as Maverick, probably more user friendly as you can set the alarms thru your phone but yea you can set highs/lows alarms for both probes. Mine has been beaten to all hell, left out in the elements for weeks, got some plastic melted because I hung it on my WSM handle but it still works!

I have the Igrill2 and I love it but I think if you have issues with the maverick et-732 having connection issues, you'll have the same problem with the Igrill or Igrill2. It runs on bluetooth which can have a pretty short range depending on the layout of your house and where the smoker is. I'd look into something that runs on wifi such as the ICelcius. I'm sure some others can chime in.

In my case the Igrill2 work perfectly but I got a feeling it may not be for you.

Not sure if this applies but I have a maverick ET-73 and just got a ET-733. The 732 was in between.

The 733 works across the house (bedroom is on opposite side of the house from patio) where my et 73 would lose signal unless it was just inside the house. 733 was a major improvement for me.

For backyard cooks WIFI and other devices that emit radio waves are the primary signal killers which is why we will never see 300' connectivity as the manufacturer claims. Outside with no interference maybe but who knows.

The 733 pops up on amazon cheap ($40-45) sometimes so that might be an option as well.

Silly question maybe but have you tried changing the batteries? I frequently lost signal but changing the batts to alkaline (NOT rechargeables as they have a lower voltage--they will work but run "dry" quicker), I have had no more issues.

I recently bought Igrill2 and air probe. I have a unique situation where I can put my smoke 20 ft from my patio door. For me it has worked great. Didn't realize how Off my wsm thermometer was, I was shocked actually. Since picking it up, my smokes have risen to another level.I doubt any of these maverick, igrill, icelsius will be long lasting though. Maybe the thermoworks might but just a feeling I have this type of product has a short life.

No doubt. I've gone through a few sets of probes on my maverick. I messed up a brand new one pulling it through the grommet on the WSM. Once I was convinced my probe might be off and while doing the boiling water test on my gas stove, I burned the probe cable like a genius. On my Igrill2 I baby the the probes. I only pull them threw the grommet in a way that can't damage the junction of the probe to the wire. So far so good.
