Only way to truly measure the temps is an IR gun or remote grate level thermometer. The lid thermometers are not made to be highly accurate and a lot has to do with where it is placed. And larry is correct about the size of the grill. Open a Q100 at 500 degrees and you get a heat wave. Open a Summit 670 at 500 degrees and you raise the temps in the neighborhood by .87 degrees.

That comment about raising the neighborhood temp got me to chuckle!
 
Playing around, thinking this would be a decent start to a patch kit. Would also address where the grates sit
