Stainless vs Cast Iron Grill Grates

Hey folks! New to he forums here. I just refurbished a 2002 Genesis C. I replaced the flavorizer bars with the stainless. I wanted to get you opinion on the grates. It came with cast iron grates without enamel. I could probably get another season or two out of them but eventually would like to replace them. In ya'lls opinion, would you go with stainless or cast iron and if cast iron, enameled or no? Thanks guys!

My grill has the SS grate, I have no issues with the SS.
My buddy has the enameled cast iron grate, he is happy too, says there is not a rust issue.
If you cook a lot so there is a constant refreshment of the grease coating straight up cast iron is probably great, but if there are long gaps between cooks there is nothing worse (to me) than opening the grill and seeing a bunch of rust.

Best bet is a GOOD set of stainless from RCPlanebuyer someone on here has his contact info. Won't cost you much more than the cast iron and will perform for a lifetime.

I bought some from RCPlanebuyer and shipped them to a forum member in Australia. They are massive and very well built. They were for a larger Weber gas grill and there were two large grates and a filler grate for were the smoke box used to go. The larger grates weighed 9 1/2 pounds each, all three were over 23 pounds.

Those from RCPlane are the solid bars, correct? I am kind of running cold on the semi-circle hollow style grates that came with the grill. I think either the CI or solid bars would hold heat better for searing.

Absolutly SOLID, the only way to describe them. I am really happy with them. CI is good, these things are something else.

And fairly easy to clean.

Like Rich (thanks mate!), I could not believe how well they are made.

I would go stainless or porcelain....not cast. Unless you use CI almost every day, you're going to have rust.

Well maybe, depending on where you live. Where I live (Arizona) rust is not allowed. I have 10 year old CI grates on my 1999 1000LX and now it gets used about twice or three times a year for roti work only for the last four years. Grates still look like new and no rust at all.
If you have a lot of humidity go with stainless.

Well, that's unfortunate.

I know some people are uneasy with EBay. I've been on EBay for over 10 years and have over 1600 sales and purchases without any problems. Really RCPlanebuyers grates are by far the best out there. If you don't want to go through EBay and PayPal maybe you could have a friend that does do EBay order them for you and you just pay them. If you want the best that's where you'll have to go to get them.

I used to ebay all the time and had positives in the thousands. I had two consecutive bad experiences as a seller, where the buyer reported damage that wasn't there and got paypal to hold my money. It was only after I 'settled' for the 'damage' (ie, had to provide a discount) that I got the rest of the money. These were both high-dollar sales, in excess of a thousand dollars each, a guitar and an amp. Things went downhill when Ebay bought paypal and were able to control the transaction.

Never again, I'll just have to buy from someone else.

Anyone have RCPlanebuyer's contact info? Don't want to ebay.

I took issue with paypal, not ebay. After $10K they wanted to "verify" (link) my bank account. That put the kaibosh on several purchases. Paypal will now allow you to check out as guest for most things, so I don't avoid ebay so much anymore.

I see - that sucks.

T Waite, don't know if it matters, but I'll definitely vouch for RC. I'll PM you his direct contact info and you can talk with him and try to get things figured out.

If you're comparing quality SS grates (i.e. the ones from RCPlanebuyer) they work as well as or better than the CI grates and maintenance is WAY easier. THe flimsy wide spaced SS wire grates Weber is using now or the old stamped channel grates than no. But QUALITY SS rod type like Weber used to use in the Summit or from RC hands down the best
