Split Pea soup -

After seeing Chuck's bacon post & Rich G's split pea soup I went to the store......

Cooked the bacon to a fairly crisp state...

3 yukon gold potatoes for the soup

I chopped the bacon pretty coarsely, I like knowing when I get a piece...can't see a pic here unfortunately :)

That's also some hard cider - my bottle washing factory is back in operation (fermented some hard cider 9/29/16

Roxy got a soup bone sliced lengthwise.

I went light with the bacon, added 3 handfuls of a wild rice mix at the beginning of the boil. I also added 4 bay leaves.

I loosely followed the recipe from The New England Soup Factory Cookbook.... It was only the 3rd time (& best version) I've tried making split pea soup.

Looking good Clint. I love split pea soup, but it has to be cold outside for me to make it and not the 82 degrees it is here today.

Nice looking bowl of soup, Clint! I'm guessing the wild rice addition gives both some flavor and body to the soup (as do the potatoes....) My recipe had neither of these ingredients, so I'll experiment on the next one. Thanks!

Excellent SPS Clint. Good minds think alike, I'm making SPS as we speak

You're partially to blame (to thank) for this batch :)

The potato flavor really came through (very slight but I noticed it a couple times & liked it).

The rice was mostly for nutritional value....... I've been lifting a little, trying to get in better shape. Split peas had are supposed to be very high in protein but not complete, same as rice (as far as amino acids are concerned), but you mix the two & it's a complete protein. Veggie sites say you don't have to worry about it and just eat a varied diet, but since I'm giving strength training another go it made sense to me.

I'm going to try this version again, that's for sure.

I need to bag & freeze 5-6 portions of this right away...... I love pulling soups out of the freezer months later - most of the time they're just as good as day 1, much like pulled pork etc.

Clint that is some great looking SPS. Like Rich said not cold enough yet but hoping for some cold weather.
