Sourcing Wood Question

Where we live there are not a lot of BBQ supply places where I can purchase quality wood chunks, so I have to resort to purchasing the bagged ones I get at Home Depot/Lowes. What are your opinions on the quality of these chunks and what sources do you use for use for your chunks?

John, any tree services in your area?
I get apple, oak, hickory and (working on getting) cherry wood from a guy up the road from me... he owns a tree service.
some of the wood chucks sold at local joints like HD and Lowes can be pretty dang dried out to the point there's no more flavour in the woods...

Try The Woodshed, I get my cooking wood from them when we go to see the grandkids in California. Excellent wood naturally dried not kiln dried like the big box stores. They also ship and you can even get pizza stove wood.
Here's the link.

There are a couple around here but not many. I've been researching some of the on line suppliers.

Thanks Bruce. I have looked at Vaughn and Fruita, I'll check out Baxter. Thanks for the info.

I'm in the same boat - there's a firewood place that has smoke woods that I haven't got for cooking yet----I've had it delivered for the fireplace by that was a long time ago.

Local tree guy is a great friend of mine, keeps me supplied whenever I need it. Call one up and ask if they have cut any of the wood you're looking for. Get your foot in the door, then one day surprise him on a jobsite with some ribs or pulled pork! You'll have a friend for life, and I guarantee you'll get your wood a lot cheaper then buying it at a store.
Just a thought,
Tim
