I know there are several places to mail order smoking woods. Before I do that and pay the outrageous shipping fees does anyone know of any retail places that sell apple, pecan, oak and such.
I live and hour between Indianapolis and Louisville so any place between the 2 is fine.

I know I can buy Hickory at the HD's, Lowes, etc. but was looking for the harder to find stuff.

Duane,
I live in Columbus IN, and dont have a problem finding wood.
I am from a small town called Nashville IN, (which is where I grew up) and have family that has wild cherry, oak, hickory, apple, pecan and some others.
Course I usually get my mesquite at walmart.
If you have family / friends / neighbors that have what your looking for, ask them for some fallin branches, or ask some farmers in your area.
You might even want to check out saw mills, or places that sell firewood.
Good Luck.

Jeff,

If you mean Impact, yep. My yougest bro. I live in Seymour, but work in Columbus. I just bought my first WSM. I am going to use it for the first time this coming weekend. I am going to try ribs, a family favorite.

I do have a friend that does have some trees and he is going to start getting me some apple, oak, pear, etc. But It will be awhile before I get it so I was looking for a dealer close by to buy a little bit to get started before he comes thru. I figure that way i can start checking out what I like and dont like.

Its nice to know there is someone closeby, I might have to yell for help in the beginning/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Have a good one/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Howdy, I live in Flat Rock, I have about one rick of hickory and wild cherry. I would be glad to let you have five or so sticks of each if you want maybe in exchange for some apple if you get some. I have been smoken about 3 mo. now I`am really enjoing it. I did 15lbs of butts and a 3lbs meat loaf this past weekend. Great!

Duane,
Yeah, Ive worked with your brother for about 13 years now.
I remembered the other day he mentioned his brother got a weber smoker like mine, and then when I seen your name, I put two and two together and figured you was who he was talking about.
You will really love your WSM, its awesome /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Let me know how your ribs come out.

Mike,

When i get the apple, i will surely trade for some cherry.

Hopefully i will get it soon. I told my friend I didnt need much. I figured if i got too much it would rot before I used it all. He just cut down an apple tree and was going to burn it so maybe I need to get as much as i can.

Wow,
We now got Seymour, Flat Rock, and Columbus IN, all in here.
Small world huh?
Either of you two going to go to the Madison Ribfest this August?
Ive never been to one of these events, and Im sure I can learn quite a bit, plus have a good time.

Jeff,

I am going to try to go, it up to my wife's foot. She broke her foot a while back and has had some healing problems

Things are much better now but the doc is still thinking about going in and taking the steel plate out once the bone heals.

My luck he will want to do it a couple of days before the Ribberfest.

I have always wanted to check out the Ribberfest sound like a good time. What have you two been smoking. Jeff have you gotten any pork from Bush`s Market? They are closed for the summer, open back up in Nov. I have tried their suasage, it was great. Want to see what kind of deal they have on butts. Duane just let me know about any wood.

Here in Michigan, there's a True Value hardware store that has a lot of grilling and BBQ stuff. They make up bags of 5# of cherry and apple for about $10. Not to bad if you have something like that around. Think Tim Allen type of hardware store - you probably have something like that around or a grill specility store. . .

The best way is to keep your eye out and find it for free. As mentioned, golf courses, orchards, neighborhoods after a storm . . . We have cherry orchards in northern michigan, I'm looking for a connection up there. One visit and I could be set for quite awhile.

True. You never know what you'll find where. Most of my BBQ supplies have come from an Ace Hardware-- my WSM, Weber Chimney and thermometer, and all my smokewoods other than hickory and some pecan firewood I cut into chunks myself.

I havent been to Bush's Market, but my wife has.
I usually just call around to price things, and just check the fliers out as well.
IGA in Nashville runs some really good deals from time to time. I just got a whole NY strip sliced up an inch thick for $3.99 per lb, ended up with 17 steaks.
Ive been smoking the usual.
BB ribs, spare ribs, country style, pork butts, and brisket.
I came across 3 briskets at wal mart earlier this week totaling over 37 lbs for $1.28 per lb.
I bought all of them and will be doing all 3 of them tomorrow evening. (an all nighter M/M method using mesquite)
I plan to use a rub I got out of Paul Kirks championship Barbecue Sauces, and add some of Stubbs moppin sauce to them towards the end of the cook. (will have my hands full with 3 briskets in there at once)
I did that on my last brisket and it was totally awesome.
I plan to use my food saver to vacuum seal and freeze alot of it.
I had to drive to Shelbyville to find more of that mopping sauce, cause our Marsh here in Columbus was all out.
Tried the chicken chicken recipe, it was pretty good, wouldve liked the skin a little crispier, (guess I could have tossed them on the grill if I wanted that after the smoke)
Hey Mike, how was that meatloaf on your WSM.
I have thought about that myself, but as one other member posted once,,,, my wife makes a pretty good meatloaf, so I better not even go there, or Im liable to end up doing ALL the cooking.

Jeff I thought the meat loaf was very good.
1-1/2 lbs. gound chuck 1-1/2 lbs gound sausage.
Had it on bottom rack in loaf pan 2hrs at 250 dome temp. Then flip it out on to grate, coated top with habanero finishing sauce and smoked 3 more hrs. Had butts on top grate. I will do the meat loaf again. Have a good 4th.
