Smoke Wood Packaging Question

Up until now I have only purchased wood chunks and chips at Home Depot or Lowes and they always come in plastic bags. After some recent posts about sources for purchasing smoke woods, I started to check some of these sites and they all have different opinions. Some seem to think that wood chunks should be boxed in cardboard or similar containers and some also say that the wood should not be stored in plastic bags for fear of mold.

My question from the experts here is this, what is the best way to store wood chunks or chips, or for that matter, splits. Since some of the smoke wood suppliers supply in plastic plastic bags and some in cardboard boxes, it makes me wonder who is right or if both are right.

Thanks to all for their input.

I think even when it's in a plastic bag, there are air holes in the bag. The main thing is that the wood be kept dry. I don't think it matters beyond that how it is stored. I have mine in old milk crates and some in an old feed bag (similar to a paper charcoal bag).

open air boxes and buckets work well here.

I use cheap small laundry baskets for my different species of wood ( which I buy online ) from the dollar store.
I label em so I know which is which.
Old dried out wood stored in a plastic bag wont show any mold compared to wood that has the right amount of moisture content.
Let it breathe, and keep it out of direct sun-lite.

So then, it should not matter how the suppliers ship them, either in a plastic bag in a box or just in a box only. Probably should get it from one of the ones that were recommended recently on the site as opposed to HD or Lowes. Thanks

Fruit woods show mold faster than nut woods. I get mine from Smokinlicious, and they are shipped in a plastic bag (with holes ) inside a cardboard box.
They recommend you store them in an open air container.

I store mine same as Jim.. 5 gallon buckets. I drill a few holes on the sides at the base with 1/2" bit to ensure I have some air flow from the bottom up and no moisture issues.
