Sauce Suggestions?

Hello all,

I seem to have more patience with cooking ('cause it's sooo fun) compared to finding/creating that perfect seasoning and/or sauce. I am doing 'ok' with seasoning lately, but having trouble with store bought sauces. I would like something sweet, tomato based with a little tang, but not too spicy mainly for ribs. KC Original is fairly tasty, but way too thick and a little sugary. Stubbs is the right consistency, but too much spice (I have a bit of a sensitive stomach...I know TMI). Curious if anyone has a recommendation for either store bought or homemade "sweet, tomato based with a little tang, but not too spicy" sauce.

Shawn - You might try Original Sweet Baby Ray's for an off the shelf sauce. It's readily available most everywhere and just might do the trick for you. Bob

I am looking for a fairly thin sauce...say if you put a spoon in and pulled it out you would be able to see the spoon through the sauce. Is Sweet Baby Ray's like that?

I like Sweet Baby Rays a lot but sometimes its too thick for what I want to use it for. I just thin it out with a little Worcestershire sauce.

Do you prefer to make your own or buy something. I second the Sweet Baby Ray's suggestion if it's the latter, but you'll have to cut it with some apple juice to get the consistency you want. On the plus side, I think this improves the sauce.

If you want to make your own, Jim's link is great.

Head Country is my favorite bottled sauce that works on anything. It's not real sweet, either. If you want a sweet sauce for ribs or chicken, try Blues Hog original.

For a thin finishing sauce for pork, I use Sweet Baby Ray's cut with Apple Juice and Apple Cider Vinegar. Start with 2:2:1 and heat to blend.

Jim...I just read the # 5 sauce and that sounds good too. I am going to make a batch to test against the thinned Ray's sauce. Thanks for the link.
