Removing rust from cooking grates?

How is Fizzig, these days?
Anyway, if it's the charcoal grate...just steel wool and muscle or a power tool.
If it's the cooking grate, I think I would replace it...you're just fighting a loosing battle.

The regular nickel plated grates will eventually rust from normal use, but I used the original grate in my kettle for nearly 30 years before I broke down and replaced it. I cleaned it with steel wool or a wire brush, then oiled the grate and maintained it like you would a cast-iron frying pan. Or, as Mr. Hartwell said, buy a stainless steel replacement and be done with it.
