I got this bbq back in dec 19. Barely getting time to rehab this. I disassembled when I purchased it. Now I’m going through it so I could start making a list of what I need to replace etc.

Lalo,
That's a pretty cool find, especially with that original side burner. I hope you can restore it to its original look as that one has history.

Larry, it is being held for Jon. I did pick it up this am. It is in better condition than expected. The wood looks original with even original finish. The wood needs work, but is in surprisingly good condition. The wood is better than any Genesis 1000 I have ever picked up and the handle is in great shape which is very unusual. The serving tray is in good shape. It is the gray color ceramic with the red pin stripes. Everthing on the grill look good except for the frame. It has a lot of surface rust, but looks solid otherwise. It has a tank holder on it so I am wondering if it started out life as a LP grill.
I have photos and will post tonight.

Jon looks like he's going to be making a trip to pickup the grills he owns around the mid west. I have one I'm holding for him too! Wonder how many others he's got locked up?

I agree. I really liked the wide slats on this weber.

This is the first grill I ever rehab. My friend was kind enough to make me Stainless flavor bars and grill grates. Need to replace the thermometer. Which is the best replacement?

Question for you guys -- id like to replace the bottom porcelain tray. this is item #99250 correct? If so where can I get one? Seems to be sold out everywhere.

Yeah, Gerry, I have up to THREE to deal with. I am planning on getting a truck one way or the other and making a road trip to get all of them in one fell swoop! Hang in there and I will get it in a few weeks.

Unfortunately, those are no longer available new, except maybe a really lucky find on eBay where someone had one left laying around in a box. Bruce is right about looking for a donor grill. Not very likely you will find a perfect or near perfect one. You should probably consider how reusable the one is that you already have. Also, the very early Genesis like yours has a different holder for the small drip tray than the more common Genesis 1000 tray which is otherwise the same size. If you wind up getting one of those you will most likely need to get a new drip pan holder as well. Still, a very cool grill that is worth the extra effort  !

This week I picked up a 2000, 1100, and a 1000 all redheads. The 1100 and 1000 are donors but still sellable when I am done. Just need a few pieces. One issue that I have is the rails that attach to the bottom of the cook box has one stud that broke off. Anyone have a suggestion on how to repair the aluminum cook box stud so the rails will attach and stay?

If the screw that holds the rail broke, then about the only solution you have is to drill out the old one.

He's talking about a "aluminum cook box stud", so that's confusing for me. I interpret that to mean the boss in the cookbox casting that the screw screws into...if it was a broken screw, he would say it was a broken screw, wouldn't he?

Are these items too rusty? Excuse my ignorance this is my first time rehabbing a grill. Also is it better to sandblast the firebox or use carbon off?

Lalo, if it was me, I would use that as a parts grill. But it will be hard to find another one to combine the parts with. If you choose to rehab that one, be prepared for a lot of grinding and repainting. Some of that may not even be salvageable. But, the first thing you should probably do is a good cleaning on all of it. A lot of times, after you clean grill parts up a bit, they look a lot better. I find that is consistently the case with frames. That rust on the bottom of the side burner is concerning. With those rust through holes, you probably cannot get that back to like new condition. If the rest of the rust isn't rusted through, then that would be salvageable, but a lot of work.

It appears that you don't live in a dry part of the country like AZ. I think it has too many issues to put a lot of time and money into.

EDIT: Have a look inside the frame for rust, and pay particular attention to the lower part of the legs without the wheels. Weber put plugs in the legs when new and it tends to trap water and rust out the lower part of the legs. The inside of the frame is bare metal and if water enters through a seam or the open ends and collects inside it will rust out from the inside.

Thanks for the replies. I ended up getting another genesis 3000. Took it apart yesterday. Everything seems solid on this one. Don’t like the Ralph’s lid. Will be replacing it with my other red one.

How hard is it to find a grey genesis lid?

Which thermometer is best for the one circular one on the lid? Weber? Import or are there better options?

Caster wheels. What does everyone replace those with? Same cheap plastic ones?

Condiments rack. Can one add a condiment rack to these like the skyline genesis?

Any must do / have modification or accessories?
