Hi! New to the forum, first post as you can see. My partner and I purchased a used 18" WSM via FB Marketplace earlier this week. We we're dismayed to have found the grates are rusted, and initially we also thought the bottom trough was rusted as well, but after reading a bit on here it seems perhaps it's just smoke gunk. Anyway, I've attached a few pictures below, I'm curious what y'all think is the best course of action as far as fixin' her up is concerned. It seems perhaps we should just get some new grates, wipe the bottom trough up with some paper towels and call it a day? I hope that's the case anyhow. Thank you!!

Looks like they let the bottom section fill with water and left it.
That should wash out with a scrubby and dish soap and a good rinse.
Charcoal grate is rusty but doesent matter. Put the whole thing back together and give it a good burn out.

The two cooking grates don't look bad at all. At little wire brush work and oiling should take care of them.

The bottom grate that the charcoal sits on is the rustiest, but who cares? Knock the big stuff off with a wire brush and fire it up. Did it come with the charcoal ring that sits on the bottom grate? I don't see it in your pics.

That will clean right up.
I have a new extra charcoal ring I’d give ya but shipping it wouldn’t be feasible.
You could make a better than factory pretty easy.

I’m running an ArborFab charcoal basket.
They are not cheap but are much better than stock.
You could look at their design for inspiration and wire tie some mesh together.

If you do have the stock charcoal basket consider wire tying a grate or cris cross two to the bottom.
This will let you reuse your coals much easier.
The cris crossing grates will make your charcoal last longer too.
