Please help with Handle Hardware on Genesis

Hi,
I really don't know what to do in this instance. The handle is fine but the part I am showing is peeling-it seems to be a silver coating of some sort, and it looks like cast aluminum underneath. Should I duo something with it or will it not rust just sitting like that. Any help/suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks George
sorry for the huge pic but this is what imager produced.

George:
I believe they are cast white metal and then chrome plated. I don't think those parts are sold separately from the handle, but I could be wrong. Check with Bruce who has a Genesis E320 he is parting out. He might sell them to you separately.

These parts of the handle are almost always shot in short order. When I inquired, Weber rep told me I had to buy a whole new handle. That is one thing I really liked about the low hood version of the first Genesis II grills. Weber went back to attaching the handle to the end caps (like on the first Genesis) instead of directly to the hood. I guess they discontinued that version, so the Genesis II grills will probably have this same problem.

My idea would be to remove, sand off the rest of the fake chrome and paint with high heat silver.

Yah, the parts grill I have has the same problem. I have only seen one Genesis E3xx that didn't have that issue going on. Sanding and repainting as Jon suggests would be my plan. Maybe even try black or whatever color the lid is. You should use High Heat paint though.

Thanks for suggestions. If they r so flimsy probably better to remove sand and spray with high heat silver. I believe HD sells the 1200 degree silver. I guess if I sand well would not need primer, because have never seen a high heat primer?? Thanks
Ps curious how would I contact Bruce if decide to get replacement. But I guess it would depend on their condition

George, I DO NOT have replacements. The ones on my parts grill looks similar to yours.

If you want to contact a specific member, just click on their name in a post and you will get the option to private message them.

Actually have a can of black 1200degree rustoleum so can save a few bucks. Just curious what would b the vote for looking better the black vs the silver? Thanks

George, I am a Newbie here. Since you have the black, you could try it and if it holds up but you don't like the look you could buy the silver and repaint it.
Hope this helps.
Richard.

I agree even though the black is not quite same same gloss as the lid. I have the rustoleum high heat black. Wonder if another company makes a black better matching the lid? Thanks. George

Unless you use "Chrome" silver, it will look like bare aluminum. I would use Black. The Rusto High Heat ultra would be a great choice.

I agree with Larry and Bruce. Go with the black rather than the silver. Silver brings back too many memories of continuously painting steel diamond plate on fire trucks before they went aluminum with diamond plate. I guess I'm fortunate that the identical parts on my grill and my son's don't have that issue due to the dryness out here. I did notice when doing the rehab on his grill, that the plating wasn't the best especially in the recessed areas of the parts. I can see how that would begin to corrode under the plating leading to the flaking.

Thanks, again. I read on the net that I should soak the white metal in vinegar for 30 seconds or so, scrub it then wash with Dawn. Is all that really necessary? It would b taking a chance with the vinegar/metal reaction? George

Thank you. How much sanding should I do. Just a rough sanding or try to make as smooth as possible before dawn and mineral spirits. George

Although I suggested Silver, I can see gloss black as a good option. Why Weber made these parts so cheaply when they are exposed to very high heat I will never understand.

The high heat paints that I have seen are semi gloss. I think I did see an engine enamel in gloss but only 500F, not 1200degrees

If you really want "shiny" then get a can of Rustoleum high heat clear gloss and spray it as a top coat. It will turn a Matte finish into Gloss.
I know it can be had from Walmart.com but probably other sources as well.
