Platinum Series Restoration - Help!

Hey! New to the forum and need some help.

I have a Weber kettle, RecTeq RT-700, and a DynaGlo offset smoker. Been grilling and smoking for about 10 years now.

My brother is getting married this fall and he's wanted an "older" Weber gas grill for a long time. I found this one on FB Marketplace for $35 and wanted to "restore" it and give it to him as a little wedding gift.

The grill works well - fired up first time and all three burners work.

1) I started cleaning it yesterday. used vinegar/dish soap/warm water after scraping off what I could. This is about as much as I could get without getting carpal tunnel. Should I be using something else to clean it? Should I just keep going? What should it look like once I'm "finished" cleaning?

2) I was able to get the grates pretty well cleaned up. Still gotta scrub the right one. They're starting to rust at the bottom a bit but probably are okay?

3) These flavorizer bars soaked for about 2 hours but I cannot get the burn marks off at all. Is that just the way the metal wears over time? Would you replace them or just leave as is?

4) For areas like this...can I just use this type of paint and apply, after cleaning the best I can? Any other suggestions?

5) For any type of accessories, where should I be looking? These side shelves are okay, but looks like they were melted a bit and wouldn't mind replacing. Any way to replace with wooden slats? I could do the work of cutting/installing/staining. Think it would be nice to have that nice natural wood look.

Seriously, ANY other recommendations or suggestions would be amazing. I want to do this right and I don't want to kill myself doing a ton of extra work if something else works better!

Thank you all so much!
Alex

Welcome to the forum, you have come to the right place.

Where are you located in Wisconsin? I saw that on MP and wished I would've beat you to it! That one looks like a great candidate for a full on restoration! Depending on your budget, and how much you like your brother you could make it one hell of a wedding gift!

Start here, a pretty good listing of everything you are looking to do is in there.

And then take a peek thru these to see what you can make it look like, and decide again how much you like your brother.

Well the wood is not "wood" but Durawood. Basically like composite decking material. Which you likely could use and simply cut down and shape. Many purists here like to replace them with actual wood. I am sure one of the many true craftsmen on this site will be happy to lend you some truly sage advice. (note I am not one of those) LOL. I'm in the simply clean it up and use it camp. Maybe slap a paint job on quickly as well.
A lot will depend on what your brother will want the grill to be used like. If he's simply wanting a good daily "driver" a good deep clean maybe a quick paint job on the firebox and such and run it. If he's hoping for a "showpiece" than one of the many true craftsmen here will guide you more effectively.
You're a good brother. If it were my brother, he'd be giving me the broken down old thing and asking me to bring it to life for him :D

Hi Alex, welcome to the forum! I saw that same grill on FBMP but it was too far for me although I would have loved to have it. I and others here have restored grills just like it so you're in the right place for help and advice. Here's one I did just like yours and you should be able to find particular restoration threads that are packed with tips.Screenshot_20250506-072337.png

I also should have said, to first check the slide out grease tray, if that is rough it can make for tough sledding, or add a bit to the overall cost.

Get yourself a razor blade scraper, fine steel wool, and simple green to start along with some 3M scrubbies. You will need these items to clean the inside of the lid, the control panel, and the outside of the cook box. The inside of the lid should look like this picture after you're done for example, assuming you're willing to put the time in.Screenshot_20231013-195711.png

Also may want to check the condition of the Z bars and see if they’re rusted badly or if you’ve got a good one. Those are the metal ends on the durawood side and bottom shelves.

Welcome to forum Alex!
You have real gem there. I am sure when you are done your brother will be very happy

that is amazing! Great work on the restore.

Can you tell me what year/model this one is? I'm going to be part hunting and trying to narrow things down...
