Performer from Craigslist

You don't need the chimney with the Perfomer gas ignition. Just pile up the charcoal in a pyramid over the flame and let it rip. I have learned to be generous with the charcoal because it goes out with vents closed after cooking and can be piled up and used for the next cook.

Congrats on 56 years which is a feat these days, also a great score on the performer they are a great grill you can do so much with them. When lighting I use the charcoal bins a lot as there is just two of us for most cooks the bins are easy to move after they have grayed out the coals you can place them for any type of cooking much easier.
Hope you and your wife have many more years and steaks together.

56 years that's great congrats! I picked up a performer off CL about 9 months ago and I must say it's really changed my perspective on charcoal cooking. It's just about as easy as my gasser's. If you get the two charcoal baskets you can put your coals in those and light them with the gas lighter and then leave them in the center for direct or use tongs or like I use channel locks to move the baskets to the sides for indirect cooking. just doesn't get any easier.

First off, Congrats to you and the Mrs. on the 56 years! My wife and I just celebrated 6 and are still amazed and excited that we get we get to spend the rest of our lives together. We're always encouraged and excited to hear about couples celebrating 5+ decades together.

Secondly, Congrats on the Performer. Great find. I only have the OTG (and recently upgraded the ash catcher on my 18" OTS), but have often wished for a Performer. Maybe one day I'll be able to convince our familial financial supervisor to approve a Performer purchase (Craigslist or otherwise). It's kinda hard to justify right now, especially since the OTG does such a great job. Oh well...

Again congrats!

Nice rescue and cleanup Dale. Maybe in a year you can go back and get the new one they just purchase because it's panifully clear that they can't take care of a good grill. I love my performers, yes I have two and use them both.

Thanks for all of the kind words, folks. I have to chuckle a bit when I realize how pleased I am with $50.00 piece of used equipment. However, I AM pleased. I am sitting here with a smile on my face. I showed it to a buddy today, and he was impressed with how nice it cleaned up. I have a bit of a tight place where I choose to place it. The rotating lid makes it MUCH easier to handle than my great old OTG. I had to walk around it to hang the lid as the added work table was in the way. No more!

The Performer is a truly great grill and I guess you can put me in the "crazed fan" category:rolleyes:. It's great when a plan comes together...

Keep on smokin',

I generally leave the charcoal basket empty on the sides and build the fire between them for direct grilling. This gives me coals evenly under the cast iron or stainless steel center section of my grate. For indirect, I build the fire in the baskets and then push them to the sides with tongs. I just build a big fire for everthing. Close the vents, put it out, and reuse the unburned charcoal the next time.
