Old side burner?

Just purchased this new in box old Weber side burner. I don’t really know that much about it. I bought it sight unseen and it hasn’t even shipped yet, but it looks to be maybe an add-on accessory side burner rather than a replacement piece. I don’t have any real plans for it to be honest. I figured I’d just toss it into my inventory for now and use it on one of my nicer restorations down the road. Has anyone come across one before or know more about them?073A09D0-E54D-4934-9A1A-E036EAC28F7B.jpeg

Wow! A rare find for sure! That is the original side burner that came with the Genesis 3 but which I understand that they sold as an add-on so you could upgrade your Genesis 2. It dates back to the mid to late 80s.😎

I don’t think they kept that design for too many years, switching to the more familiar setup with the igniter and controls on the top.

I think you should save it for when you find a first generation Genesis 2, 3 or 4. It has too much historic value to throw on a newer grill.

I also wouldn't add that to a flipper, I'd hold it for my own keeper grill. I like the control knob and ignitor in that position, and the stainless looks so good on top!

Tom Do you still have this?

Yes. I unboxed it back in June to get a better look at it while considering using it on a Gen 2 I had at the time. The Gen 2 was just so original and unmolested that I decided against it and boxed it back up.

This is cool!!
I do have a perfect condition control panel and side burner on one of my Genesis 2-3 grills but it's a later Genesis 3 with a more common style side Burner. The other one is a very early Genesis 2 and would have come with a side burner that you have if it was a 3

I agree with you I don't prefer a side burner on my own personal grills either but I still think it's a cool piece of History.

Wow! That is an awesome piece! Now that I’ve owned a grill with a sideburner, I would never not have one!

I want two types of side burners.
One with about 25K BTUs that I can use for wok, and will get my 12" CI pan smoking hot for searing or will boil a 20 quart pot of water for whatever.
The other one I want around 5K BTU, windproof that I can use to keep sauce hot and simmering.

I use it primarily for boiling water for cooking sweet corn. It’s a large pot, not sure of its size. It takes about 20ish minutes to get boiling but love being able to do it outside when the AC is on in the summer.

If you get your hands on good sweet corn don't make corn soup out of it. Leave the husks on. Just cut the long silks off the tops and toss them on a hot grill. You don't boil away all the flavor and you keep all the sweetness and flavor in

I am kinda in the middle on grilling corn. I shuck the ears and then I wrap them in tin foil but add in about a tblsp off butter. Then I lay them in the grill and flip them a few times. I can't say I have ever tried grilling corn with the husks still on though.

Yeah, that just gives you burned butter and corn. It's the best thing if you have really fresh corn. If it's supermarket corn then no. By the time you get it the sugars are already turning to starch. There are only a couple farms I buy it from. because I know they only sell what they can pick every couple hours or so. And it never sees a refrigerator. It goes from the field to my grill within a few hours.

I have a few local stands near me that they pick it and it’s on the cart for sale. Fresh is so much better! And knowing the $4-5 goes straight to the farmer without Uncle Sam getting any is an added bonus
