Newbie here, with an old Genesis

Hi all~
I was surfing marketplace, looking for another grill like my old one, because I thought my old one was toast.

We got this grill from Lowe's (I've forgotten when) shortly after we bought this olde house (1849) as a restoration project. I searched (and paid more than we could afford--$700 from Lowe's for this chocolate colored model) because we love steak, and I couldn't get a good sear on any other gas grill we'd owned. I took great care of my grill the first few years--kept the cover on, cleaned it regularly...but then life happened.

Elder care for my mom, then health issues for my husband, and there was sad neglect.

I light the burners with a grill lighter. I use a fish grilling aluminum thingy on top of the grates cuz the old grates get metal in our food. And STILL, this grill cooks for us 4-5 nights per week. It's a freaking TANK.

I have loved this grill, but thought I had to say goodbye to my beloved friend because the bottom was rusted out completely. I was looking at the Member's Mark grills from SAM's because the new Webers don't seem as tank-like, and honestly, we can't justify the $1500 they want for a similar build. But nothing would really replace the Weber I have loved.

Then I hit on this forum searching for Weber Genesis used grills!

After poking at my old grill, I realize the "bottom" of the grill is not part of the actual box!

Some thingies are rusted, but the actual box looks solid!

I'm going to be reading, and hope to get advice on where to get parts and refurb my old friend! Ready to learn from all of you!

Oh....I'm a writer and editor, who has recently returned to the green industry. I do turf management for money now. I'm decent with tools, but have a LOT to learn about these grills.

Thank you in advance for all the remedial help I know I will require. I know nothing. *hangs head*

Welcome Cassondra, from what I can see you have a few things that need to be attended to, but you should easily be able to replace a few parts and have it cooking again. If you have not registered it with Weber, I would. Some parts may still be under warranty.

From the pics it looks like a 2011 to 2016 Genesis 310. Inside the cabinet is a sticker with the serial number. The first two letters are the date code.

Please post a picture showing the whole grill as this will confirm the model.

AA - 2011, AR 2016 more dates on the link below.

You need:
1. new flavorizers bars. I recommend 16 gauge stainless steel if you can find them. I would not suggest original weber porcelain coated steel.
2. new bottom heat deflectors.

You may need new cooking grates. It looks like you may have had them upside down. I would flip them so the flat side is on top and snap a picture. They may be able to be saved.

With those two items, and a good cleaning and scraping you may cooking again.

Do your igniters work? if not, sometimes it just needs a new battery or sometimes the bottom of the battery holder needs to be cleaned to make a better contact?

If the grates need to be replaced, I'm not sure what I would suggest for a 300 series. There's been some discussion recently, I'll see if I can find the thread.

Here's another site I have bookmarked for parts for that grill. It is nice in that it is a complete list. I've bought some things from this site before.

good luck

Thank you! Stand by for more photos. I finally found the stickers. Genesis E310. Serial number: ********* (number removed on advice from members.)

I expect to need new cooking grates. Photos inbound for those, as well (waiting for them to upload from phone). I flipped them over a few years ago to get a bit more life out of them. They leave metal in our food. These were a nonstick cast iron I think. I priced them a couple of years ago and they were very expensive from Weber, but I've been told that just a stainless grate will cook as well. Open to any advice.

Thank you so much for the links! My ignitor doesn't work. I've been using a grill lighter for a few years. Once I determine exactly what I need, I'll order all of it. Will depend on all of you for advice on cleaners, degreasers, and any paint that is needed.

Ok, so a 2012 E310 The parts listed above should fit.

Tons of info here on cleaning, painting restoring in general. Many of the tips are for older grills/

Start a new thread in the weber gas grills forum and we can watch you return this to cooks like new again.

Hi Cassondra, WELCOME!!!!!!

I hope you will stick around and share your cooks with us.
This is really a very nice, friendly, and VERY informative group of people here. They knock themselves out to help people and share what info. they know.

Welcome Cassondra, I applaud your desire to return your grill to good working condition rather than just throw it away and buy a new one like many people do. Some of the parts may not be cheap but since a new Weber grill of similar quality is north of $1,000 these days it is definitely worth your time and effort. You're in good hands here for any help or advice you may need.

I am astonished at the warm welcome, honestly. I am part of some other forums (not grill related) which are not nearly so welcoming. I hope to become part of the community here! I'm not the best griller, even though my Weber is my best friend for cooking. :sneaky:

I'm very excited to learn. I doubt the sum of the parts will end up being the cost of a new grill, and I have serious doubt that a brand new weber will be of the quality of my old friend. (nothing much is these days, which is very sad.) Thank you so much for the warm welcome!
