Newbie here, with an old Genesis

Welcome Cassondra! This is the right place to get advice on refurbishing you beloved grill. But make sure you stick around and explore the the Recipe, Grilling, Photo Gallery, Just Conversation etc. sections of the forum. There is a Great group of people here. 🙂

Oh, did I mention we love pictures, of food, grills, pets, scenery, anything. 😆

Welcome here, Cassondra! I wish the best for your family and restoration projects. You've already met several of the very-talented folks whom have and will continue to offer insight and guidance on your Genesis restore.

The other really nice thing about fixing up a functioning grill that you already have is that you can go in baby steps and decide how much effort and money you want to invest in each step. There is probably a 3x difference or so between the nicest parts you can get and the cheapest parts.

I didn't know for sure if other stuff was okay here or not. Off topic from grilling I mean. Are there special subforums for that? I admit I haven't looked at the tutorial thread for how to use this board yet. :sneaky: I've been going fast and furious learning from y'all, working on my grill.

Oh Cassondra, I forgot to mention RECIPES!
Joan along with others are recipe Gurus on here and they are well worth checking out!

Sorry Joan, I did think of it but I really did forget. Me Bad! 🙁
Oh that's an EXCELLENT bit of knowledge. I am seriously behind on looking around the forum (learning to find my way around). I will have to remedy that asap. I enjoy new recipes, and will share whatever I have too, but I truly am not that great at grill cooking. I'm pretty good with Salmon and Steak, chicken tenders and have a great recipe for jalapeno poppers, but they're simple and nothing fancy. I'm always wanting new things to try on the grill.

Thank you so much! Yes, everyone has been amazing!

I'm going to try to start with good grates, which I've ordered thanks to the refurb thread. Other parts I may end up having to go less expensive as I move along. I am a "buy once, cry once" person, but the current inflation has hit all of us pretty hard, and we are no exception, so will do my best, and maybe upgrade as I can!

Even for just repair parts, you need to accept that you will be spending more money than an entire brand new grill from some sellers. You will end up with a better cooking grill that works better and lasts longer. You will come out ahead in the end, but there is that upfront investment.

One internet example that sells for about the cost of some Weber grates:

I'm confused. That cannot be a good grill.

Nothing compared to the Weber.

Am I missing something I should understand? (I'm slow sometimes. It's a real question.)

This might come across as blasphemy here, but reading some of its hundreds of 5-star reviews, I believe that it cooks basic burgers and hot dogs to many people's satisfaction all over the country.

It expect it would fall far short of a Weber grill in every other area except price - warranty, customer service, durability, evenness of cooking, parts availability, longevity, quality of components - the list goes on. Your are completely correct that the Walmart grill is nothing compared to the Weber. Even Walmart knows that and the price reflects it.

So forget the brand new Weber grill for a moment. The question for the moment is that the same pile of money would buy a couple of replacement parts for a Weber grill or an entire brand new grill from Wallyworld. You choose.

The ethos of this forum is obviously on choosing the Weber and keeping it running as long as possible and I personally agree with that. I'm just trying to put things in perspective as you jump into our collective Weber rabbit hole.

Got it.

Before I got the Webers, I had Wallyworld grills. We had been married for 24 (ish) years I think when I got the Weber Genesis. We had been going through a Wallyworld grill about every 3 years. They just fell apart, and never got hot enough to sear a good steak. So we stretched and got this one, and obviously 12 years later it's still cooking our food (though it is in need as you can see).

In the long run, I hold to my "buy once cry once" philosophy, though I have been at the place where I couldn't do that, and may one day be again, and completely understand when anybody can't.

I really appreciated someone (maybe you!) who said, "if money is an issue" as they linked to parts and gave me ideas for my refurb. That said a lot about this forum and the people here. That everyone is welcome and we don't have to all have ready cash to want to save our old Weber grills. I will probably tread the line with sometimes the "best" parts and sometimes the "budget friendly" parts. But yeah. I just dropped $200 on parts for this Weber. That's about what I paid for those old WallyWorld grills we had starting in 1990. You nailed it.
