New to me 22 inch kettle

A green kettle was advertised for free on one of the local facebook pages and seeing that it is winter it not a very popular item! Thinking ahead to the summer and that I might like to try cooking pizzas I went and collected it.
It’s rather dirty, has a small dent on the lid and one of the wheels need fixing on properly but apart from that it seems ok!
It also came we a free load of water...

I always like to know how old these things are and from the date code it’s from 2000.
Green is not really my colour so it will most likely get a makeover!

You can't beat that price!

I think you can do more than many people realize with that kettle. I wouldn't recommend changing the color because no repaint is going to hold up or be anywhere as good as the porcelain finish that it already has. However, if you shine it up and upgrade your handles, you might decide green is nice after all. Most would agree it is a nice change from basic black.

Here is a link to our friends at the Weber Kettle Club (we have a number of shared members, including me). I believe you will find that this guide is a tremendous help in bringing your old kettle back to life. It has helped me a lot. Notice the section on the right with restoration advice:

Here is a source for beautiful wood handles if you are willing to spring for the price. They aren't cheap, but I went for a set myself and was very pleased with the quality.

If you really want to go all out, here is a source for the ABSOLUTE BEST in replacement grates. Mark at KillaGrilla makes fantastic 304 stainless grates that clean up nicely and will last you for a very long time (unlike the nickel/chrome plated originals that look good for one or two cooks before disintegrating:mad:). From personal experience I can HIGHLY recommend these:

All that Greenie needs is a good scrub and a new grate. Home Depot has a dual hinged gate for maybe $35, maybe less

Thank you, I will take a look at that site 😁
I already thought that the handles could be changed and as it happens I am pretty nifty with wood so once I take the old ones off I will make some new ones myself. This is my first bandsaw box I made!

I will see how it cleans up before I buy any parts for it. I am on a small island of the coast of France so postage from the US might be a bit pricey!
 
Your bandsaw box shows your considerable woodworking skills (I’m more than a little jealous), making a set of handles should be pretty simple, even I have done them!
Get the grate, make the handles and get cooking! Don’t worry about the color, they all cook the same.

Wow! That is beautiful. No reason at all with your skills that you cannot make your own really nice handles. It will give your green kettle a whole new look! Look forward to seeing what you can design.
