All I can say is that I wouldn’t let one thread or a few members dissuade you from the forum. There are a lot of good people here that welcome your input/experience/questions with whatever perspective you are willing to provide.

It’s not the ‘New Owners’ TVWBB or the ‘Old classics only’ TVWBB. It’s just TVWBB. All are welcome who can respect each other, and give each other the benefit of the doubt that the vast majority are participating with good intentions. I‘ve come across the wrong way plenty of times, without meaning to. (Hope that doesn’t come across the wrong way:cool:)

Hope you decide to stick around and post often….we like pictures too!

I hope you don't really feel this way.

When I first joined the forum years ago I kind of sort of felt that way a little, but then after I remembered that some people try to type sarcasm, and some people might seem mad, they really aren't. I know for a fact that I have tried to be silly or funny on here and it was not read that way, and that is my fault. What I'm trying to say is, there is no other place to get the kind of advice freely distributed here, and I really don't think that there are any regular users who harbor bad feelings or even get angry.

I will take a gamble here (the gamble being falling into LMichaels' bad graces) and say that Larry can seem short tempered. At least I have interpreted some things he says as short tempered. But then when I go look at all of his contributions and advice, sometimes the same advice over, over, over, over and over again, I can see why he wants to be very clear and very direct. Therefore, I have concluded that LMichaels is not short tempered or angry. At least I hope he's not angry with me. But like I said, it can be hard to tell, especially with Italian-Americans like Larry (and half of me).

I'd say go have a beer, grill up something delicious, and feel free to participate in the forum if you want. I can speak for myself when I say that everyone is welcome and fits in here, and it would take a lot more than reluctance to disclose your location to actually get somebody mad at you on an internet forum specifically about Weber gas grills.

The other thing you can do about the location conundrum is just claim to live in Centralia, PA. You don't even need a grill to barbecue there :)
 
A lot has been said here, let me try to wrap this up with a couple of comments.

Location is a required field during registration. I have always allowed members to decide for themselves how much or how little detail they want to offer regarding their location. That is not going to change.

It is true that in some instances, having more specific location details in your profile can help others help you solve a problem better, find a replacement part faster, or even offer you in-person help. I also think that people are genuinely interested in meeting other people and knowing where they are from. But for most of our discussion, specific location doesn't matter. When it's needed but has not been provided in a user's profile, it's easy enough to ask for that information.

As for Larry's original post...Larry offers help to a lot of people and sometimes specific location is relevant in doing that. He expressed his wish that new members provide specific location during registration, but that's just his wish--it's not an official rule around here.

I know that the interactions between people on a discussion forum can sometimes be challenging. I have worked hard over the last 22 years to create an environment here that is friendly, helpful, and respectful of everyone, whether you're a newbie or a long-time member. It's a work in progress and things are never perfect, but from the many comments I receive, it's clear that this community is one of the best out there.

I encourage new members to ease into things here, before too long you will be on an equal footing with even our longest tenured members. I encourage long-time members to reach out to new members and welcome them into the fold. I encourage everyone to give others the benefit of the doubt when reading their posts and to assume that others are only trying to make things better here.

P.S. If you want to update your location in your profile, click your name at the top right of any page, then click Account Details, then scroll down the page to Location, enter your update, and click Save.

Thanks, Chris. Really, nothing more need be said, but... :)

I have long been a communication specialist. Without question, face to face discussion is truly the only way to really effectively communicate and even that can be dicey. Anything else, and especially posting in a forum, is just fraught with pitfalls as has been noted. Mindreading is always difficult and especially via any kind of note. What's in your mind when you write often isn't what is interpreted when it's read. I try really hard, but have made my share of mistakes both writing and reading. Try to cut some slack and maybe ask for clarification. And then cut some slack.
 
I found this forum about a year ago when looking for advice on restoring an 05 Summit Platinum D6. I received some good advice, but mostly positive comments encouraging me to comment on my progress to share with others. I understand it’s mostly a vintage Genesis forum as they are by far the most popular grill, even though I have never personally seen one. I admire the work, dedication, ingenuity and craftsmanship that the regular suspects display here. Keep on keeping on!
 
Actually, TVWB -- The Virtual Weber Bullet, WSM -- Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker. :) But yes, it has expanded and I love that we can also talk about my not-so-vintage Weber Genesis experiences also.
