New Firmware Version Released - v4054

Yeah. I got the email too but didn't update the firmware yet on the grill. I'll do it this weekend.

I never got an email but I'm registered. I updated last night. I did my test today. I recorded a lot of data but will try to condense it. I used Pit Boss pellets, Weber IGrill 2 ambient probe and the OAT was 85° F, no wind. Hey it's Florida and summer is close. I tested it at 200° F, smokeboost, 275° F, 400° F, 600° F, 300° F, and then smokeboost again. I gave it lengthy time at 400 and below to make sure it was stable. The test ran 4 hours. I gave it big temp reductions trying to get it to flameout and it didn't. I opened the lid at 200, smokeboost, and 400 and each time it recovered without hesitation. I opened the lid for 3 minutes while on smokeboost and it didn't come close to flaming out. For me, everything works but smokeboost is useless for me because it runs mostly over 200. After I ran my test I restarted again but in smokeboost and the temp again steadily rose to above 200. Smokeboost would not hold below 200 even though the pit probe showed lower as seen in the attached screenshot. The grill works, and I trust it for long cooks, but I am extremely disappointed in smokeboost. In February I did a factory reset and got smokeboost temps. below 170° F/77° C. I'll try that next.Screenshot_20210409-192310.png

I had not thought about buying a Smokefire. However the grill gods have tempted me again. I just saw a new, unused, EX4 a neighbor is selling for 1/2 price as he is moving. He said he purchase it at the end of last year. How can I tell if it is a Gen1 or Gen2? Should I consider it?

IT DOES NOT MATTER. BUY IT!!!

You can figure all that out later. Weber will send you the new parts.
Even if it’s already registered? I don’t think so.

really though the only thing you need is the welded black auger chute, it makes all the difference!!

I'll try to make an appointment to see it. I really would like to know if there is a way to physically tell by code or part if it is a Gen1 or 2.

Shine your flashlight down the square hole in the bottom of the pellet hopper. If the pellet chute in there is black then it is Gen 2. If silver then Gen 1. The serial number is inside the hopper lid. If he hasn’t used it maybe he didn’t register it. I would buy that thing in a heartbeat. Good luck.

I have an appointment to see it. Is it possible to tell by the shoot? A gen 1 is straight and a gen 2 is more of a zig zag? I'm guessing by all the encouragement that you love them? I was going to just be happy with my Q, kettle, and WSM18 ;-)

Joe, the easiest way for someone who hasn't seen one is to look at the color of the chute. Yes, the new chute is a straighter path to the auger tube. Here's a pic of the new auger assembly. The old tube was black but the silver colored chute was not welded to the tube. It is now and the chute is black.. Does that help?Auger assembly.jpg

As previously stated On the underside of the Hopper Lid the Model # is shown. 22510201 is the Second Gen. You would not regret acquiring the Unit. I love mine. At $500 it's Robbery

So I got the EX4! I believe it to be the Gen2 by the hopper slide. I got it home and installed some updates. Now I am trying to decide to flip or keep. I just got my first WSM18 last week and only got one cook in. I was looking forward to some more charcoal fun. The one thing this can't do is rotisserie and that is sort of a deal breaker as a one grill to rule them all sort of thing. Has anyone thought about cutting some holes in it for a rotisserie? The other is electric. I would have to keep this on the garage porch and run an extension cord to it every time I wanted to use it. Not a big problem as I do the same for my rotisserie. I suppose I could use it for a while then sell it later? Too many grills and so little play time. What pellets do you recommend?
Thanks for all the encouragement to spend money.

Dude Keep it. Its a great Pit and you Scored less than 1/2 price. The Grillmaster Blend Pellets from Weber are nice.

I picked up some Pit Boss competition pellets from Lowes on the way home tonight. Did not see any Weber pellets. Are the Pit boss ones any good? Should I return them? I know nothing about pellets, which is just under how much I know about charcoal. Propane is so easy;-)
