My Copper Turd Mods

Thought I would share the copper kettle mods I've done and have planned here as well. Currently I've added the vent handle and high heat gasket to the lid. I've purchased the Vortex, different great and baskets. Today I ordered wood handles from GrillHandle.com and look forward to those coming in.

The pics above were from August of 2019 and has been used quite a bit since then. Decided to clean her up a today and remove the major buildup.

That’s no turd! I like the vent mod, I really think I need to see if I can get a buddy to turn some from the cypress to match the overperformer table! I might “need” a smaller Vortex for the 18...

Thank you, Tim! The vent mod has come in handy many times and makes for quick adjustments. I may want to switch to wood after the new handles show up. I don't remember the size of the Vortex I ordered, but would take up a good amount of space in an 18in.

I really like that vent mod. If I didn't already have the same plastic curved bracket as the MasterTouch on my kettle, I'd definitely be adding that. I might get one for my WSM.

I agree, no point in adding it if you have that one already. I thought about getting another one for the Jumbo Joe, just haven't pulled the trigger since it's not used that much.

I know someone has pointed out where they found those vent handles but, I’m too stupid to figure out where I saw them, where did you get yours Drew?

One other thing you should do from time to time, is take off the bolts that hold on the lid handle. Clean off the threads of the bolts and clean the nuts. Do the same thing with the thermometer. Remove it and clean it (front, back, sides) from time to time. This will just make it easier to take off in the future to replace in case your thermometer stops working or your handle gets bents/broken.

The wood handles will look nice, only down side is when you swap out the side handle you will lose your built in BBQ tool hooks, if you use those.

Nice looking kettle! Like the copper colored ones.

I purchased mine from BBQ Smoke Mods website. Think they were around 4 bucks plus shipping. May be able to find it on Amazon as well.

Thank you, Kyle. I'll make sure to do that the next time I clean her up. I really want to make sure this one lasts for a good while and open to any ideas to do that. SOB! I didn't even think of the tool hooks! 🤦‍♂️ I use them pretty much every time out of convenience and pretty sure I could live without them. Have you or anyone ever looked into the Dragon Folding shelf? Was looking at that the other day, but was concerned how much wear it would have on the side of the kettle?

I think I’m going to talk to my cabinetmaker buddy about making some in cypress to match the rest of my handles. Should not be to difficult turn a few. Thanks for the information!

New mahogany grill handles arrived today. Couldn't be happier with how they look on the copper turd. I have some steel wool that came in to get those stubborn stains I couldn't get in the last clean.

Recently picked up the basic KettlePizza to try making pizza outside instead of in the oven. I modified the hinged grate slightly to be able to load wood chunks when needed and wanted to share. Works well with the Dough-Joe 15x15 1/4in steel we were already using in the oven.

Gotta say I didn’t really like the copper until today. Thats a good looking grill.
